D3 BT high pressure fuel pump

Broke down last night and the RAC diagnosed
"low fuel pressure. 75bar on crank only. 250 required to start. suspect hp fuel pump"
He got me going by squirting sure start into the air system MAF area which worked as once it started the car ran fine.
I'm going to try to get it booked in somewhere to get it looked at.
a) how long can I use it with the spray till I can get it looked at?
b) how much is the high pressure fuel pump likely to cost?

Well I've answered one of my questions; it managed a mile and had to get the garage to fetch it. And I'm sure they'll answer the other on in due course!!

So, the garage are trying a solenoid, failing that it's the high pressure fuel pump which they won't do. Tried my local indy, he won't do it either and have recommended a diesel specialist in Swadlincote.
Anyone any experience having a high pressure fuel pump replaced?

Doesn't sound like you are having much luck with your D3 at the moment.

Assuming you are local to Swadlincote, it's probably not ideal but I would consider speaking to an ALPINA specialist like BMR or CPC for some advice as they will understand the nuances of a D3 BT but in reality I would expect any BMW/Diesel specialist should be competent enough to help.

Its the first time I've regretted buying it in 3 years!
Sadly both of those places are too far away. I'm in the Midlands.

So.... the saga continues. The current garage have said the fuel pump is the problem. Seems no one wants the job either. A diesel specialist has quoted 1200 to change the pump inc VAT and labour. He has however said there is a chance that the fuel pump has broken up inside ad if so it will need new injectors which looks like it will double the price!!

That would be extremely bad luck. It’s normally the B3 BiTurbos HPFP. Not sure if there is a low pressure pump at the tank end you can try first, the B3 has one both ends IIRC.

I’m sure a decent local garage can change a fuel pump, it’s not that hard for an experienced mechanic, some garages just see dollar signs when a BMW or Alpina rolls up.
