Yes, thanks Phil, that applies to e46/e39 cars where the whole unit is changed. I'm talking about the later iDrive set ups like CIC & NBT and the use of a module that utilises the factory screen.

I know a few guys with 6 series cars who have fitted this system and rate it and the backup service.

ScooBeeFive, I will let you know how the update goes.
Thanks Paul - much appreciated. Must admit I’ve not got around to checking what version mine is but it would be great to have the latest update.

Good stuff Frosty, let us know how you get on.

One thing I've been researching over the holidays is retrofitting Apple Carplay/Android Auto. The biggest driver for me is to have full phone functionality through the iDrive screen. In particular Google Maps/Waze, Spotify and replying to messages.
It also means the phone never gets accessed while driving which is a very good thing. It'll also make the factory nav redundant.

The systems used to be expensive and not so well integrated in the car. As is usually the case, development has been rapid and from what I've seen there are now systems that are almost like a factory set up so I'm keen to give this a whirl. The only "bit" missing is integration with HU display.

If anyone has done this upgrade let me know. Very likely I'll be going for it so I'll let you guys know in case of interest to others.
This sounds great too Asim - look forward to seeing how you get on.

I’ve been looking at this lately also and done quite a bit of research.

This place in Nottingham can fit Apple play in my 2014 iDrive for £599:

I’m considering getting it done, be it’s quite expensive!

Yes gazoo, a number of suppliers happy to sort this and take a fair wedge to do so.

I'm going down the DIY route and can see options at 30% of that price, and are fully wireless for both Carplay & AA

Absolutely gazoo & Paul.
I'll try and get on to this soon, before work gets bonkers again. I'll do a detailed write up so you and others can do the same on your own cars.

Hey gazoo, you spying on me mate? About the time you posted this I was literally just finishing up the install!! Great timing!

So apologies for the delay. After some lengthy research I bit the bullet and bought the Carplay box. I ordered it from Aliexpress from a supplier in China - took 10 days to arrive.
Install was pretty easy but I did run into a couple of problems - this is due to the loom covering all possible permutations of the BMW looms & systems.

But I managed to sort it and have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the car, both wirelessly connecting and working through the factory screen :D

I'll do a proper write up and share for others.
