Space Saver when running 20" Wheels

Post by ScooBeeFive » Tue Oct 06, 2020 12:17 pm

Hello,

I'm thinking about purchasing a space saver spare wheel to keep in my car. I'm not 100% comfortable driving without a proper spare wheel, as the mobility kits won't always get you out of trouble.

Has anyone running a 20" wheel purchased a space saver? It would be interesting to know what size wheel you went for to clear the brakes etc. I've been looking at the below site - there is a 17" wheel recommended for a standard F10/F11, an 18" for F01 and F07 amongst others (the B5 has F01 front brakes I believe) and even a 19" for The X5M.

https://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/optio ... wheel_kits

Obviously the offsets vary so probably best I contact them for advice, but would be good to know if anyone else on here has bought one.

Cheers!
Paul

Sorry I can't help with the space-saver, but I notice you have a Touring like me and I carry a full size spare in the boot at all times as like you I worry about travelling far with only a 'goo kit' and I'm not sure how comfortable I would be with a spacesaver either even if driving gingerly. The spare is a front so can fit on front or rear - might be worth seeing if you can get a single alloy if you are happy with compromising the boot space - it's not like the extra weight will make any difference with that much power and as mine isn't my daily I don't do big shopping trips where I need all the boot.

Cheers, Jules

Hi Jules, thanks for the reply.

I really need to keep the boot space in mine as I do use it daily and it gets pretty full going on holiday etc with the kids. I used to keep a full size spare in the boot of my old 130i when I ditched run flats but it wasn’t ideal! I just wish they still sold cars with a wheel well that could carry a space saver out the way under the floor.

Hopefully a space saver won’t be too intrusive - I think it’s worth it for that piece of mind. I’ll contact alloy wheels direct and see what they recommend. I can see they do sell Alpina wheels and accessories so hopefully they will have some information on brake clearance etc.

Out of interest, I tried my Dad’s space saver on the car today which he uses for his M2 - it’s actually an 18” for an X5. It did fit but was super tight on the brake caliper clearance so I’m thinking a 19” would be better.

Hi ScooBeeFive,

Did you you get a space saver you were happy with? I'm trying to find one for 20 inch wheels on my F32 and Charles mentioned at C and M, that Porsche do one that works. I've seen on your link that there is a BMW one for the F32 but you have also mentioned having to use a spacer. What's the answer my friend?

You know, I keep putting this off but I really need to sort it.

I did speak to AWD and they sent me some info on the F01 space saver. It looks like it should fit, I just need to bite the bullet, order one and see.

We are both then driving around with our fingers crossed!! Every time I look for a space saver the web site says it won't fit an Alpina D4. It could be that the Bot dosn't know what an Alpina is but if you find any more answers please share them with me. Thanks Paul.

Yes, still got my fingers crossed with no spare wheel. I was looking again last week - nearly £300 for something I *hope* fits OK.....
