Alpina Blue Metallic 2 Touch Up Paint

Post by ScooBeeFive » Tue Sep 29, 2020 9:24 pm

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has purchased any touch up paint in Alpina Blue Metallic 2, or any other Alpina colour for that matter?

The paint code on my car is X06/5. I’ve had a search around a few different options:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/233724571495

https://paint2fix.com/touch-up-paint/bm ... gJHKfD_BwE

Could anyone recommend a good one to go for? The prices seem to vary a fair bit but I’d rather pay a bit more and know the colour match is going to be good.

Thanks all!
Paul

I have the same paint code on my D5 and bought a Chipex kit, very happy and would recommend.

Thanks Metrics.

I've just put my reg into their site and it comes up with the correct car. Colour just says 'Blue' - no mention of the actual colour name or paint code. Was that the same when you bought yours? If so, I'll take the plunge!

Cheers!

I've used Chipex on a few cars and always been happy with the results.

I was disappointed with an ebay purchase of touch up a few years ago as it was too purple and the company sent a replacement which was still the same. I also got confirmation from Alpina a few weeks ago confirming the paint on my car is X06 as I kept noting that the date range for Chipex and Paint2Fix covered later dated cars. The cost of either of the ones is similar as the Paint2Fix is twice the volume of the ebay one. I asked the local dealer some years ago for touch up but their response was that they could only mix up 500ml or 750ml I think at the cost of a few hundred pounds so didn't go down that road in case of an expensive mismatch.

Once I get my car sorted mechanically I am going to get some bodywork attended to and hopefully get some of the left over paint as touch up. But I wouldn't mind trying out these options if others owners have been successful.

I have used these in the past https://www.paints4u.com. My car is Carbon Black and the match was good. Fortunately at the time of ordering about 7.5 years ago they was able to mix it in cellulose therefore giving a gloss finish without the lacquer.

Cheers for all the replies - your input is much appreciated. If I can confirm the paint code is correct, I think I’ll go with the Chipex. As mentioned above, they list ‘Blue’ for my B5 - no mention of colour name or paint code. They list the Alpina B7 on their site with Alpina Blue 2 (X06) so will get in touch and see which I should order.

A friend of mine has used their product on a red Golf GTi and was happy with the results.

I actually asked Sytner Coventry if they could supply touch up paint when I purchased the car. However, they said exactly this - they would have to mix a large amount and it would be prohibitively expensive.

No worries. I contacted them directly to ensure peace of mind and they gave me plenty of reassurance it would be correct shade from the paint code,

Alpina Blue is notoriously difficult to match. As we know the shade flips a lot in different light and it just takes it to be fractionally out for that flip to look different or wrong. Ask me how I know!!
Touch up is a bit easier to deal with as the chips are so small. Just pray you don’t need a panel painting or a bumper.

Another reason why these paints are hard to match is the paint has to be applied in the same manner as the surrounding area. Depending on how the original paint was sprayed onto the bodywork affects how the flake elements reflect the light at any given angle, so an identical paint can appear different because the paint is applied in a different axis to the original.

Widely known that metallics are difficult but you don't realise how complex some paints can be until you start to look into it.

I’ll drop them a message and make sure I get the correct one. Thanks again.

And please don’t mention panel damage or painting - I dread it. I’ve been paranoid since I’ve had it about someone driving into me!

In general, the colour of Alpina Blue has amazed me. I can’t quite believe how much it changes in different light conditions. It’s bordering on a flip paint at times. The main comment I’ve had from people since buying it is how much they like the colour.

Thanks again for your recommendations - I've just placed an order for the Chipex set.

Their customer service seems excellent so far - I mailed them earlier for advice, and they replied within 7 minutes to confirm the paint code was correct for my registration.

The Chipex set arrived today - looks very comprehensive. The application process sounds a bit scary, spreading the paint over and around the chip and then using the blending solution to blend it all in. Fingers crossed for some good results.....

Paul, it works well. You need a bit of practice and the key is not to apply too much pressure with the solvent on the cloth & foam block otherwise you take off all the paint from the chip.
Some good videos/reviews on YouTube that will show you how.
