E93 B3 BiTurbo Running Rich

Post by Brick_Driver »

Hi all,

Treated my B3BT to a full tank of V-Power and a nice long run in the sun today, and when I got back home and left it idle for a few minutes there was strong smell that you get when a car is running rich. I plugged it in and there were no fault codes stored and the live data suggested that everything was running within normal parameters. So is it a characteristic of the Alpina map to run on the rich side with these cars?

Cheers
Matt

I don't think so. Double check your air filter? I use PP Pipercross in the B3 and B4 the latter has a 30A engine. Never had a drama, fyi.

Thanks, hadn't really been driving particularly hard either. Though I have noticed that both inner exhaust tips are a lot darker than the outer ones. Maybe something to keep an eye on.

The inner tips are fine if you look outer only have a tail pipe as such so don’t get dirty

Mine certainly is due for a walnut blast and overhaul at 106K.

They do get a lot of carbon build up over the years as the N54 is direct injection. Also the injectors do wear out and leak.

Check the spark plugs electrode colour and may as well swap them out if they are over 40k old.

The tailpipes are not physically connected to the exhaust, unless it is a GT3, the exhaust tailpipes sit in these and the outside pipe is branched further so most of the gas passes through the inner pipe.

Get the injectors checked, it’s a very well known weak spot on these N54 cars. Do it soon as you could get some serious issues if the injectors are leaking.
Latest versions are index 12, make sure you are sitting down for the cost of new ones, they are crazy money these days.

Yeah, I did see the cost of them! £650 each and if I’m reading right will need to replace three at a time! Is there anyone out there who rebuilds the injectors? Though to be honest, I’ve not smelt the same smell since

Correct on price. Not aware of any rebuild routes.
