Another Alpina?!

Post by ScooBeeFive » Fri Oct 15, 2021 11:12 pm

Wasn't really sure where to post this, as it's not directly Alpina related.....

I sold my 911 this week - it was a sad day, having owned it for over 10 years, but I just wasn't using it lately. TBH, buying the B5 last year was the final nail in the coffin for it - I love it so much, the 911 saw even less use.

The question is, what do I replace it with? I'm not going to rush into anything, but I'd like something a bit more relaxed in nature that the family can fit in (wife and 2 small kids). We also all fancy a convertible. A B3 or B4 cab could be ideal. I've been sorely tempted by a couple of the E36 B3 cabs that have come up recently. The green F33 B4 recently spotted at Sytners was also an absolute beauty.

Needless to say I'll be keeping a keen eye on the classifieds from now on!

I don’t know what your budget is Paul and even a used example is a lot dearer than the cars you’ve listed and you will not go wrong with another Alpina but a left field choice would be the Lexus LC500 convertible. I was looking at coupés a couple of years ago; N/A V8, genuine supercar looks, exclusivity, interior material and build quality that puts anything German to shame and presumably bombproof Lexus reliability.

The thing that prevented me genuinely considering it as a purchase was that the rear seats wouldn’t accommodate baby/toddler seats; IIRC it could accommodate booster seats for older kids.

I have been looking at the two white B3Ss currently for sale. I think maybe if they were a different colour I'd be more tempted. There's a Santorini Blue one out there somewhere!

I'm totally with you on this Sal - they are amazing. However, there are only 2 Cabriolets on Autotrader, the cheapest of which is £86K. A bit rich for me....

There are plenty of options though. Maserati GranCabrio and DB9 Volante are at the scarier end of the ownership proposition. A C63 Cab is maybe more sensible. As a huge BMW fan, an M6 Cab would be a no brainer, but it's such a similar drive train and cabin to the B5.....

There were lightly used coupés for £50k a couple of years back but the cab came out later so evidently they’re pricier so fair enough the best part of £100k is a lot of wedge for a second car, especially when the first is a B5. Of the cars you listed the heart would say DB9 but I’m not sure I would actually touch one for reasons you’re already aware of; one of my partners at work has a V8 Vantage and some of the relatively routine bills that throws up are eye watering. Ditto the Maser I would guess though it looks fantastic. I’ve always had a soft spot for the F12/13, one of the best looking modern BMWs. The Merc would have the advantage of sounding epic with the top down.

Alpina cab does sound like a decent bet, provided you can find a good one in the spec you like.

To be honest, I’m suffering serious budget creep. My original plan was to find a nice E36/E46 B3 for £15Kish and keep the rest. However, it’s all gone to my head and I’m looking at much more expensive options.

An F33 B4 would be very hard to ignore. An F13 650i would also be a real option - I’d rather the relaxed approach compared to an M6. C63s are still top money at the moment.

We’ll see - I’m in no rush and hopefully the right car will be obvious when it comes along. A Sonderlack car would be great!

The Santorini B3S is a Coupe Paul. It’s the one that got stacked at Goodwood before it was even registered. It pops up on Instagram at a specialist who seems to’ve been working on it recently.

I’d totally forgotten about that one, not sure it’s ever been seen since those original sale pics were added

It looks superb - I love that colour.

It’s a familiarity thing too - any car looks good in a non standard colour (within reason). There seem to be far fewer Sonderlack cars these days compared with the E36/E46 era though.

I was looking at that earlier - it does look good. I’m assuming carbon black wasn’t a ‘standard’ colour either? I’ve always been nervous of owning a black car though as they show every spec of dust!

Appreciate the offer of taking a look for me. I’ll give you a shout if I’m interested…..

I really like this at the moment - not an Alpina, but I think the spec is very Alpina. Love the interior and the overall colour combination:
