BMW Turbo Gullwing

Post by tlake » Sun Jul 22, 2018 8:05 pm

I have always thought the Bracq 1972 Gullwing was a nice looking and more interesting car, than the later Giugiaro e26 M1. With an uprated 2002 Turbo engine (200 hp) BMW said it could do 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds and 155 mph. So not much slower than the M1. It also introduced the raised hood powerband. 8)

That's very interesting, and of course this car, the new BMW HQ, egg cup museum and e12 5 series were all ready for the Munich Olympics.

I think Paul Bracq said he did the styling, and the wheels, in under 6 months. :!: One car had rear wheel spats because he was trying to do a modern BMW 328.

One readout on the dash told your lateral g reading. Something which has only come on performance cars in recent years.

They raced the 2 liter turbo in the touring car championship (2002 vs Porsche 911), and Alex von Falkenhausen told the jounalist Paul Frere the gearbox could stand more power than 170 hp. :)
