Test drive one
I found the gearbox very jerky and no where near as smooth an an Alpinas to change gear
7gtronic on the 6.3 engine is a better bet

ali, do you mean the MCT speedshift - as I thought these were the std fit gearbox on the 63 AMG models.

And were 6.2 litre engines?

Excessively pedantic I know!

A friend has a E55 AMG Supercharger with the 5 speed automatic gearbox, with retrofitted C63 back boxes and sounds awesome. Driven it and a fantastic car

I have also driven the SLK63 AMG and a fantastic car, I believe newer gearbox than the SLK55 AMG.

My understanding is that the SLK55 is also a 7 speed gearbox.

I think AMG realised the same as ALPINA - automatics only, which ///M division also finally adopted.

Unless there is a fault with the gearbox I can’t see why the gear changes will be jerky

If the SLK55 has the same gearbox as the E55 - this is considered to be one of the best AMG gearboxes because it handles the torque.

My only criticism with Mercedes is with most of them tend to be light at the front and too comfortable

Also I’m not a AMG expert therefore can be wrong about they took the same approach as ALPINA with regards to automatic gearboxes

I'm looking at the R171 versions. Hand built AMG naturally aspirated 5.4L V8 + 7G Tronic with AMG Speedshift. Tried one yesterday, box was smooth with no jerkiness at all. Sounded great and pulled like a train. Still cant make my mind up!

I mentioned E55 because it is the same engine apart from the supercharger, and the SLK E63 because it’s the next model up

I was referring to the earlier 5 speed box and should have described the gearchange as ferocious as opposed to jerky. It just seemed to want to snap your neck at every upshift opportunity and yes you're quite correct it is a 6.2
I'm currently looking for a nice C63 facelift wagon 2012 onwards but they are just a tad out of my £20k budget. They all seem to have either exceptionally low miles or very high miles
The noise of that engine is incredible
Hope you manage to find something

I recently sold my 55 R171

It was an amazing car - brutally quick, looked stunning (In my opinion), handled surprisingly well, was comfy & easy to drive long distances.

Everything worked and nothing fell off.

The reason I sold it was that I just didn't like an auto box in a sports car - felt like it was driving me. If they made a manual I'd have another tomorrow!

They are so much car for the money. Mine was a 60k miler and was absolutely immaculate with reams of history. Sold for £13k (I sold it too cheaply but hey ho...)

The auto box is what's attracting me as I've got a knee problem. Your car sounds just what I'm looking for, shame its sold!
