Donington BMW Show - Sunday 23rd October ++UPDATED++

Post by D4 » Wed Aug 24, 2005 11:56 pm

Ok... some outline details first.. i've yet to have confirmation of the exact stand size and layout etc.. but I've been having discussions all week with the Car Club and the event organiser and these are the plans as it appears at the moment.

This year's Donington show is being organised by Andrew Greenwood (who orgainised the spring show at Stoneleigh) which should mean it being a damm sight better than last year's effort by Total BMW.

It is also planned to be used for the relaunch of the BMW Car Club Alpina Register which has the possibilities of being one of (if not the) biggest registers in the club. It is also Alpina's 40th anniversary and we will have some support from Sytner Nottingham as well as published press coverage.

We are therefore planning to have a pretty special display. Now before everyone get's really excited and carried away (and I include myself in this). I'm being told that there will unfortunately only be room for about 15-16 cars inside the hall as part of the official register display.

Now this presents me with a bit of a problem. Clearly we had at least 17 cars on display last weekend in Gaydon and with the prospect of only 15-16 cars at this event, how do we make it interesting or different.

Our plan:
We would like to if possible put on a display which features as many different model variants as possible charting the 40 year history of the brand, i've therefore listed below the type of display I mean.

+ + + E D I T E D + + +

INDOOR DISPLAY

Z's
1 x Roadster S - Simeon Holder

02's
1 x 1600 - Gus (possible no show)

3's
1 x E30 - Paul Colwell- B6 3.5s
1 x E30 - Simon Alcorn - C2 2.7
1 x E36 - Dennis B3 3.2 Cab
1 x E46 - Charles B B3 3.3 Cab

5's
1 x E28 - John Safe B7 Turbo
1 x E28 - Peter Thorpe B9 3.5
1 x E28 - Darren Brailsford B10 3.5
1 x E34 - David Weeden B10 Bi Turbo (FOR SALE)
1 x E39 - Alpina46 B10 4.6
1 x E60 - B5 (courtesy of Sytner/Alpina GB)

6's
1 x E24 - Craig Pusey - B10 3.5

7's
1 x E32 - Andy Douglas B11 3.5
1 x E38 - Richard Croxford B12 6.0
1 x E65 - B7 (courtesy of Sytner/Alpina GB)

OUTDOOR DISPLAY

E28 Andrew Wightman B9 3.5
E28 Jimmy Hills B10 3.5 (FOR SALE)

E30 Kuldip Singh C2 2.7 2 door
E30 Narinder C2 2.7 2 door

E32 Steve Street B12 5.0

E36 John Goodwin B3 3.0 Coupe

E38 Conrad B12 6.0 E Kat

E39 Brett Huball B10 3.2
E39 Geoff Walpole B10 3.3
E39 Alan Woolcott B10 V8

E46 Debbie Croxford B3 3.3 Cab
E46 Ravin Jansari B3 3.3 Cab
E46 Charles Lovibond B3s Touring

I HAVE HAD QUITE A FEW OTHER PEOPLE SAY THEY ARE WANTING TO BE ON THE OUTDOOR SECTION - BUT THESE ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO HAVE PAID SO FAR.. IF YOU DO WANT TO BE ON THE STAND TIME IS RUNNING OUT...

I know this limits many from displaying their cars inside the hall but I thought as it's an annivesary year and the launch that it would be better to try and have a theme,

I am however also invistigating with the organiser the chances of an outdoor display or Alpina parking area which would allow those visiting and not displaying can congregate.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.. I have a few ideas for the cars to be displayed. And will be hoping to contact a few of you in the coming weeks once I have more details.

++UPDATED++

I've been speaking with the event organizers and I've managed to secure an additional display area - in addition to the main indoor display - for about 20-30 Alpina cars outside the main hall in the adjacent gated compound.
This area will be locked at 9.30am and will form the outside part of the
event so cars will have to be inplace by this time...

Tickets will are £6 per person in advance.

I would love to see as many of your cars there as possible and would ask you to contact me to
let me know if you're planning to attend.. If so i'll need to have payment
for your ticket(s) by 12th October (to give me a chance to get it back to
you intime...)

I've contacted as many of you as possible directly.. but for some I just don't have email addresses etc...

Andy,

Like your thinking in terms of a good range of vehicles.

If you would like an unusual E46 - one with a big boot and labrador in the back - then let me know (OK, the dog is optional). If, however, someone else is really interested in displaying their car then put them in the frame first.

I also like the idea of an outside area just for Alpina's.

If there is anything any of us can do to help - just shout. Even though you clearly proved your organisational abilities at Gaydon (against enormous odds) you don't have to do the October event on your own.

Looking forward to hearing how things begin to develop.

Take care

Charles

Charles I don't want to commit to anyone just yet until such times as I know the exact space i'll have available.. but suffice to say that your car is definately on the shortlist for the E46 spot.

One other point as the show is indoor for reasons of health and safety as well as to keep the show intact cars will again have to be in place by a certain time (the day before if it suits - as there will be overnight security) but importantly cars won't be able to be moved until such times as the show ends (around 4-5pm in it's the same as previous years).

I'm also more than happy for people to help - trouble is i'm a bit stubborn so you'll find I never ask for it.. even when it's clear to all around that i may need it...

Understand about selection

Clearly some training in the art of delegation might help - for a small fee I can do this for you

ah... delegation.. yep that's definately what's needed..

trouble is i'm such a fussy sod that I've tended to go through live up till now with the 'if you want something done properly.... blah blah blah' moto.
both in work and private life...

don't worry when I know you all better i'll be only too glad to start getting poeple to help organise... but at the end of the day I didn't want to burden people especially those kind enough to come along with their motors... (anyway it was only a bit of organised parking) :D

Andy,

I'll have to pass on this one ...... :(
I'm on holiday and will be in Bruges on that Sunday.

Make sure you get a good write-up in the Club Mag.

Simon.

Ok

here goes again...

i've spoken to a few of you ( you know who you are and in order to try and feature a single model to represent the brand over the last 40 years i'm still trying to find a few cars...)

Perhaps you where there is one or perhaps you even own one.. but i'm looking for the following (i've got a few options for some of these but am simply trying to get the bext examples...)

E21 3 Series (C1 2.3 or B6 2.8 )

E12 5 Series (i think there was one in the UK - not sure where though)

E34 Bi Turbo 5 Series - now there's a few of these - but i'm looking for show quaility if poss.

E52 Z8 Roadster V8 - Sytners have given me an option but if you know of one or better still own one let me know.

E85 Z4 Roaster S - Gimlet's on holiday - anyone else got one...?

Whilst I have options for the E36, E46 and E23 models - I've not made a decison yet on which ones will be at the show.. if you haven't contacted me already and want your car in for consideration let me know...

Might have a problem with mine - my darling wife decided to take my car on the schoolrun on Wednesday and returned with nine scratches on the NSR wheel rim - yes NINE :(

Not sure when I can get it in for repairs and wouldn't want to show it unless they are fixed. Will keep you posted but would recommend that you put me towards the bottom of the list for E46 options

If nobody else takes up the offer and you are stuck - It can be arranged alyhough I realise that as I already have one for the display it would be fair for someone else to have the cance.

My wife's B3.3.
(amethyst with champagne and amethyst piping - convertible) is still available if you are stuck.
