B10 power steering hose leak

Post by Alpina Jim » Thu Aug 29, 2019 10:40 pm

A power steering hose on my '98 B10 has a minor leak, in fact the hose is only damp.
The hose is called a "radiator return line" and connects the cooling coil to the reservoir. It seems to have a join in it with a securing clip so could be leaking from there or the hose could be porous. Has anyone had any experience with this part leaking?
Also, is it simple enough to replace the hose where the brass end goes into the cooling coil, there is a plate with a bolt holding the two hoses at that end.

Thanks in advance.

I've not replaced any of my power steering hoses but they are known to leak on pretty much all E39s (mine have a film on from time to time that I wipe off). Many people cut the end off the hose at the P/S reservoir end and use a regular hose clip instead of the BMW Oetiker clamp but I'm not sure that helps and I've read there's a small filter in the reservoir cap that can get blocked.

Useful info Barry, many thanks for that. I will have a look for the filter that I was not aware of, also as I have cleaned the hose off I will see where it gets wet and go from there. If not I will go for a new hose but that will involve removing the air filter box as a minimum to get to the lower fitting that I am not sure about.
