I'm hoping someone can help me to identify this transmission from the standpoint of being able to order parts for it. I managed to break the pilot tip off of the input shaft when I was wrestling the engine out. A foolish mistake....

The bottom of the case is clearly stamped ZF-S5/40-009-146

I can't seem to find the ZF S5-40 acknowledged anywhere. I believe its a special unit for Alpina but it seems reasonable that it could have been made from parts from another unit....

I ended up emailing ZF to try to identify this thing. Here is the reply I received in case anyone is interested:

Hello Mr. Miller,

the ZF transmission S5-40 was never produced in series production.

The development was stopped at the end of the testing activities.

Alpina got this information and took over all available prototypes and

Assembled these in some vehicles.

Therefore we have no spare parts available, probably you try direct with

Alpina.

The cover at the side of the transmission is not a PTO cover, it is

Necessary to assemble the reverse idler gear.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen/Kind regards
