Post by rc944 » Thu Jan 11, 2018 10:34 am

even though your dampers may not be leaking etc dont take for granted tehy are fine! pull the sleeves down and the bump stops and check the condition of the metal shaft/slider

ill post pics of mine later! think apple core...

Hi rc944,

Are you referring to how rusty and chewed up the metal shaft is and thinning out?

If so, I to experienced the same on my rear shocks when I changed them back in June 2016 (mine had approx 105k miles). The metal shaft was rusted where water was getting in, due to the shock sleeve/protector had lost it's grip on the top of the shock and allowing water to get in and sit on top on the sleeve (retaining water) against the shaft.

As well as changing the shocks I had new shock sleeves and foam sponges installed. But a little tip to prevent the sleeve from slipping down off the shock (during wear and tear), wrap the top of the metal shaft with thick tape (to make the shaft thicker), then slide the sleeve on so it's nice and tight. This should help prevent the sleeve from sliding down and allowing water to get in and rust the shaft.

Doing my front shocks and springs next month (genuine Alpina parts), along with new shock sleeves, foam sponges, top mounts, top bolts, gaskets, lower spring rubber pad and drop links. Estimated cost with labour: £1500 ! ouch

Cheers
Sat

Hi,

I didn't - I was unaware of that company. Also I thought that original Alpina parts could only be bought from BMW (or Alpina themselves)?

I will check them out - many thanks.

With regards to your original post, about the shock absorber shafts, was the condition of yours the same as I described for mine? With the rust issue and thinning down?

for anyone cruising around in an e39/e46 or prior platform car, my advice would be to get yours checked no matter how pristine, low mile etc you think your car is!
