The other is a “low spec†car without the special leather interior
But £75k
But £105k list
So in relation to new the same % drop
Not as collectible is the opinion

Let's take a more common sense approach..
From a collectors perspective:
- can you wait for 30 years before selling it on?
- will you drive it?
- it should be Alpina green or blue
A car that you drive everyday is not a collectible car. You will invest a lot of money to pay the premium for an Edition 50. Where 99.9% of the people buying cars don't care about when you want to sell it on.. The market for Alpina's is very small as you will probably know..
Buy a new shape B5 less investment, less to write off, same fun.
This is coming from somebody with 6 cars in our family, so I know the feeling!
Cheers,

I totally agree
I suppose this would be my first Alpina
So maybe a first car at £90K is extreme
Plus my last few cars have been Porsche that have not lost £££££ - GT3 , Porsche Boxster Spyder - so losing funds is a new place to be
I would guess 5000 miles pa so it will be 15000 miles in three years
Be the old model by then so value restricted despite being a limited edition

Test drove the B5
Had to hadn’t I
So ...
great presence
Beautiful car. Right dimensions. Right spec. Stunning
Off we went and the car was quite happy at 30/40/50 and you had no sense of what it could do
This is in contrast to my GT3 which always wants to go faster
Test drive over and I thought ...
Very nice but slightly “so what “
Curiousty served

Good question
I’m currently struggling to find anything to “get me »
Im waiting for the new GT3 to arrive but that’s not for daily driving
That’s my challenge - what would make me look forward to driving
I have an SL500 which was highly Specd by the first owner. £94.k new in 2006
And I drive that car and think it’s so good
Full leather
Panoramic roof
Quick
Sports exhaust
Made like a real mercedes
Honestly hard to beat
Cost me £18500 with 38000 miles
Hence my dismissal of lots of options

I have an F11 B5 Bi Turbo and they are underwhelming to the uninitiated. I've even met BMW "buffs" who ask what it is after its left them for dead and they thought it was a diseasal, so I understand the "so what" aspect.
I looked at the new Panamera ST when it was launched (invited by Porsche West London) and that's a bit more special inside and out but then it's the option between under the radar and in-your-face.

Many thanks for the comments
I mean "so what" because the car had minimal personality . In my opinion of course
I have older cars that I smile when I am in them. 2006 SL500 and a 1997 Porsche 9934S - plus the 991 GT3 which has had a personalty bypass on purpose!!
And I lust after my Oak Green Mk2 Golf 16v that I had - you now get the drift

Re: B5
You have a great taste in cars, but what you seek from these benchmarks you've quoted will be nigh on impossible with anything modern. If you go for an older Alpina you will find that personality.Bieldside wrote:Many thanks for the comments

I have a E39 B10 V8S and a F10 D5 BT - polar opposite in terms of personality, but both are fantastic cars in their own right - just depends on what you really need and seek at any given moment.
If it's soul, then go find a nice B10 V8/S - as in my opinion they have what you seek in bucket loads.
Older cars will require upkeep and potentially big bills, but they won't depreciate at anything like what a modern variant will - and this seems important to you also.

I don't believe they were that much new. I think the garage was trying to make a profit at that money.Bieldside wrote:Well

Very tempted
Most other cars that are new bore me rigid
Unfortunately the restricted roads in the UK are not the ideal playground for a 600hp 200mph car...it's going to be difficult to get the best out of it and its sounds like your test drive was underwhelming because of that. Believe me when i say that 130 is still pedestrian in a B5. I don't think the neon stripes look right either. They definitely don't work alongside the B7S-esque tartan seats (which are amazing!).
Seems a little disproportionate to spend that on something you may not really see the potential of...but your Merc/Porsche arrangement tells me you like a daily and something a little more visceral, and an Alpina B5 is a fantastic daily driver. If you are fortunate enough to be in a position to buy one of the two UK cars at this age then that is an opportunity not to be missed. I know who owns the other one but I can't say too much about that.
As I found out, the character of my E60 B5 really only came out under circumstances you wouldn't get on a test drive. It's a stunning machine.
If you don't like it you can sell it, but if you miss the chance...
