B10 V8 Engine Noise - Help Required

Post by ABRAD » Wed Jul 12, 2017 1:04 am

Hi,

Annoyingly Dellboys B10 V8 engine has developed an annoying tapping noise.

Still runs ok and about to get further investigation done - but would appreciate any information from owners of similar cars that may have had a similar issue??

The videos are pretty big showing it running so I've put them on the "Youtube" links below.

Any advice appreciated.

I don't know definitively but I have seen a number of threads over the years about noisy VANOS units?

Sounds like it maybe a sticking hydraulic lifter/tappet. If the cars not been run for sometime the oil bleeds out the lifter, its check valve sticks not allowing the oil to pump it up. Hopefully a good run should sort it out.

Cheers Guys,

Hopefully it is that - but it has had a couple of short blasts on the mway - which quietens it but doesn't make it go away.

More investigation req. me'thinks!!

Doesn't seem to make any difference to it's running so I hope it's that simple as it was parked for ages.

Really difficult to say as these noises are quite common M62 units of this vintage, but it could be anything from a tappet to vanos unit.

There's a procedure for bleeding hydraulic tappets on an M62. Have a google and it should come up. It's something like hold at 3000rpm for 3 minutes and repeat 5 times. The BMW service bulletin does say driving won't work.

Hopefully it's just one of the tappets and it will disappear after a bit more driving.
My only caution would be to say that my engine had been carefully maintained for the last 5 years and was sounding great but after an innocuous short drive it had turned into a wreck as the timing chain guides gave up with no warning.
Not suggesting this is your problem but for peace of mind I suggest you find a mechanic who knows the M62 engine if the noise persists.
My guides are done now and the engine is back to sounding nice & quiet.
Enjoy the car 👍

Well after 3 years and the noise getting a bit louder, I took the car to Phil at CPC. Turns out it’s coming from a cylinder valve due to some scoring. Luckily it appears to be one cylinder

As car is on 100k miles and has leaks from crank seal, timing chain cover and is also on original organic head gasket, timing chain guides not done yet, looks like it’s time to take the plunge and sort all the jobs in one hit and give the engine an overhaul.

While the engine is out, I expect there will be some other jobs that make sense doing - Phil seems to be the right man for the job.

Any advise greatly received.

Empty piggy bank time!

Very true. In reality the cost is less than many pay a year in depreciation- well at least that’s what I have convinced myself off :D

Picked up the car today after 6 weeks of it being at CPC. After full engine strip down, lined and rebore of 1 cylinder, new piston, head gasket, and all seals replaced no more tapping noise!

Big thanks to Phil and Boris for doing such a great job!

Now need to get some gentle miles down.

Sorry to hear that it was such a big job, I thought that you had nailed it with the oil change at Sytners.

Did you also do the chain guides or were they ok.

The oil change a couple of years seemed to get rid of the noise for a few weeks and then it came back. Phil at CPC had no real explanation on why the piston/cylinder had the issue but he has seen it a few times.

Yes timing chain guides were replaced and so were the con bearings. The main bearings were absolutely fine as were all the other pistons and rings.

So I am hoping that with the later x5 head gasket fitted and all gaskets/seals replaced, the engine is now not a concern for many years to come.

You couldn't have had a better person than Boris on the spanners. I was at CPC when he was mid rebuild. Glad all is now good 😀
