As someone mentioned, you'd have to really want the Alpina as a 335i Touring would be half the price.

I popped across at lunchtime today to have a look out of curiosity (I work two minutes away), and thought I'd share an appraisal here in case it helps anyone. Note I'm definitely at the "fastidious" end of car maintenance so I'll try to avoid being too picky!

I'd probably rate it a 5/6 out of 10. It felt dirty (the leather needs a good clean), and it smelled like either a smoker or a dog has been in it (or maybe a smoking dog Wink ) for extended periods of time.

It was also really dusty and looked like it hadn't moved for a day or two.

I'm sure it could be returned to a really nice car if somebody spent time, money and affection on it - but IMO that's something you would do on a 10k car, not a 23k one.

Sounded nice though!

Was it really that bad?
Was this the B3S Touring that was pictured getting a lot of engine work recently?

I'm genuinely interested in this car and started negotiations with Paul Higton at Sytners.
What are the likely things to go wrong / need changing as it approaches 100k miles as it is nigh on 90k miles now.
My E46 B3 needed gearbox and all suspension replacing as well as radiator etc.
Anybody know the Achilles heels of the 335i?

The 335i problems are turbos, wastegates, high pressure fuel pump, I think water pump too.

Maybe negotiate a cast iron BMW approved used warranty for at least 2 years as part of the deal? Will cover you on major failings.

Trouble is parts like suspension will not be covered unless straight failure, as due to mileage the wear and tear aspect will be looming large.

Good luck with it all though, hope you can get a good arrangement with it.

Here is the ad for the coupe b3 which indicates some warranty work by sytners
Perhaps use this in any negotiations for the tourer they don't come up and you are stuck with what does come up go for it I like it it's very discreet

I put an offer in on the car on Saturday but not heard back from Sytners
They promised to call back within 24 hours but haven't.
Paul the dealer principal was super busy on Saturday and fobbed me over to "Top salesman" called Ish who was quite a pushy salesman and made it difficult for me to get a word in edgeways.
He would be good at selling normal BMWs but didn't really seem to grasp the true Alpina concept

Paul does not understand the Alpina ethos Sad being an Alpina Gary or Jonathon should have dealt with you.

Come back Matt you are sorely missed Very Happy

Indeed

yeah surely you get someone like Gary when buying used? they don't have enough cars to fob you off with some bonus chasing sales muppet whos a 114d specialist in estoril blue

Go Ali! I can't say if the car was a bit dirty that would put me off, none of it would apart from paying too much. Didn't alpina fit better quality wastegates so the B3s don't suffer this fault like 335's can?
