I'am a stripping maniac

OK, it was time to prepare the car for its new interior and some other upgrades.

Order of the day, strip everything out of the car, inspect for any issues (rust) and prepare for new insulation using dynamat extreme and superlite.

Existing sound proofing under the rear seat and parcel shelf (if that is what it is supposed to be) just crumbled upon touching it.

Will need to sort out the rusty bits around the plug holes first.
All except one plug looks fine metal-wise, one not so fine and may require insert of new metal for a proper repair.

Did I f@ck up - you bet ya

Upon, removing the Steering wheel etc, the Slip Ring decided it was going to give me a little surprise in which the centre part popped out.

Now, I have figured out that you need to wind back the ribbons from both ends but man, for the sake of my sanity and the possibility that the damage may already be done - I will probably just buy another one, just need to decided whether to go new or 2nd hand.

Also, there has always been play in the steering in which we are now 99.9% sure is the actual steering column itself. So again buy new or reconditioned? Remembering to purchase one for an automatic.

I love doing strip downs like this. While I have never done it on a BMW, I have done it a Mondeo ST220, Lotus Carlton and several Omegas.

Nice work, I'll be removing my dash soon to replace the blower fan and having to psyche myself up just to do that!

The slip ring is alpina specific as there is extra wiring for switch-tronic. The e36 version is about £1100 new!

My mate barry is breaking a 3.3 saloon he might still have it

I think the slip ring used here is the same as used on the e46 with an SMG or SSG Paddle wheel. Part number 61318379091 about £130 new from BMW. Worth checking part numbers on your slip ring ( I could be wrong!)

Checked slip ring which has the part number: 61 31 8 379 091, as given in the alpina parts catalogue for a b3.3.
Well actually the sticker on the slip ring gives: 61.31 -8 379 091.9i

Now does this mean its a BMW part utilising SMG paddle shift capabilities or does alpina modify this part as suggested by Simon.
I would assume if an alpina modified part they would give it a specific part number very different to the BMW number.

Simon, just in-case, let me know about the possibility of a spare one as you have scared me a little, it definately makes me look into sorting out my current one and accept the mental implications.

i'd go with daves advice as E39 and e46s are very similar,

I've text Barry to ask if he still has it. If the part number is a long 11 digit BMW one on their ETK then its a stock BMW part. Its when you see the short 7 digit alpina only part numbers you worry!
