Dust and bugs

Post by Alpina Jim » Thu Jun 22, 2017 3:30 pm

My B10 only gets used occasionally, and hence washed infrequently, but it tends to pick up an annoying coat of dust while sitting in the garage. I guess it is a case of using a car cover or similar but I like to see the car when I go out to the garage for whatever reason. So the question is whether there is an easy way of removing the dust apart from having to rinse it off? Does an Arizona duster actually work without swirling or scratching the paint? Any tips please?

Also, bugs. After a 50 mile round trip recently the front of my B10 is nicely bug splattered but otherwise the car does not need washing. Can anyone recommend a bug removing spray that works well without marking the paint or taking off the carnauba wax finish?

Thanks in advance.

An AirFlow car cocoon, or similar, will let you see the car when you go to the garagae or cheaper a cover is the way to go for the dust issue.

Simoniz Bug Shifter is a brilliant also AutoExpress Products Award winner 2014. Spray on leave a bit, rinse off and dry no need to wash whole car.

Thanks for the replies gents.

Unfortunately my garage although plenty long enough has limited width and I do not think a Carcoon or similar will fit very well. I need access to walk through the garage as there are stairs at the other end to get to my workshop above.

The Simoniz bug shifter sounds excellent so I will get some and give it a go.

Don't write off the idea, I've seen these and other similar alternatives put into some tight spaces. Thee sides have access doors to allow access/egress. Check what space you have and check the size of car shelters, as long as it's about 12inches on width and length then you will probably be ok to fit one.

If you already have wax on your bumpers then get some Quick Detailer sprayed on will easily remove the bugs and also can be used for the rest of the car if needed. I used to use Meguiars Last Touch, I now use Autosmart Tango but theres loads out there. Use a soft microfibre towel.

Agree a quick detailer should work, I use autoglym one and it's great for bits like that

I bought some Simoniz Bug Shifter from Halfords for £5. It did an excellent job and the front end of my B10 was bug free again in a few minutes. Spray on wait a bit and wipe off, really easy, and a lovely lemon smell . It also excelled at getting the bug splats off the windscreen so I will keep it in the boot of my daily driver for when I do a long journey.

Thanks again for the tip.

For gentle dust removal I use a Polished Bliss lambswool duster. For bug removal I use Auto Finesse Citrus Power.
