Noob D3 Questions...

Post by Jay_hagga » Mon Mar 13, 2017 11:27 pm

Good evening peeps.. just had my first alpina. ...an e91 d3 No 181 and have a few questions. .. what size are front / rear discs? Looking to replace these soon. Can taxation class be changed from plg? Should I be getting better than 35mpg combined (stats replaced..no boost leaks etc).

MPG

Welcome! I have early 2012 automatic D3 (post LCI E91) and normally get 40mpg combined. 45 MPG on motorway, 35 MPG in mainly town driving (base on trip computer). I dont have stop start on the automatic so I'd expect bit more if you have LCI manual.

I've changed the stats and now getting 42-46 combined..but about the same on a run..nowt like the stated 58 lol... wondering if my maf is acting up as low down torque is pants.. or is that just the characteristics of th d3...

I find mine similar, i.e. slower than i expected at low revs when i put my foot down hard.

Foot down after the lag is great...but still seems a lil underpowered at low revs but have no benchmark to compare...changed air filter today..What an arse that is lol... as for the tax..waiting on bmw to send info on co2 emissions info to pass on to dvla..should be able to get reclassified as band g instead of plg.

Around town I regularly see 38+mpg. Motorway runs I can get 48-60mpg (60mpg in 50mph average camera zones). That on a 2006 D3 MT.

Going to check egr and map sensor at the weekend...maf appears ok.. (disconnected and drive was worse)...Though found that rear tyres are 35 profile not 30s so expect that not helping mpg readings either. ..no codes on dis/inpa..apart from 3 glow plugs :x oh the joys lol..

This is probably why your power and mpg are down. Running on 3 plug means your DPF wont self regenerate and you'll be progressively blocking up the DPF......

The BT cars are 265/35's, but the MT's are definitely 265/30's

Do i take it that it won't regen at all if there are glowplug issues? I've done 5-6k with no issues (fingers crossed ) . Looking at removing flaps soon so shall replace plugs then...and have pair of 30 profile rears to go on when tyre change due.

Yes if glow plug or controller has gone you will not auto regen.

Sadly you'll never know the history of the car and when I say history, I'm referring to the fuel used.

Poor quality diesel used through it's history won't help giving poor returns in MPG. Stick in some high quality diesel and give it a good hard drive to help clean the engine, then stick to high quality diesel and you'll start to see increase in figures.

For reference I only use Shell or BP in mine that has a quality cetane rating and always avoid supermarket and sub brand fuels.
Nothing to see here.... move along in an orderly fashion please!
