Swirls upon swirls.

Post by Easy-pd » Fri Apr 01, 2016 10:55 pm

So when you look close, the paintwork has swirls and scratches BUT they look kind of 'blended', as if they have been polished out in the past. It looks to me like it has been deeply polished. In fact there is a bit on the rear bumper where the topcoat has worn through if you look close. After me doing 50,000 miles there are swirls and scratches on top of it. I am guessing as they look to have been polished out in the past, I may not be able to have it done again? I'd like to get my paintwork looking great again. Is there anything that will go on top of the paint to hide the swirls, like some sort of coloured wax or something? My car is black

^^

Is what I used to use on my black D3 to tide me over the winter when I couldn't face being out in the cold and detailing my car.

It's great at hiding swirls and lays Down a protective coat that you can wax over.

Was going to say the same...try a Glaze product on the car...helps fill the swirls in. Was recommended to me by Polished Bliss when I had my old 328i Sport.

Sounds like someone polished the car badly....I'd take it to decent detailer to get them to check the top coat thickness.....then you'll know whether it can be put right.

Had mine done at Midland Car Care in Walsall, West Mids.....still looks great 5yrs on!

Good Luck!

Swirls are the downside of owning a black car. Excellent advice given in the previous posts. This http://www.soft99.co.jp/english/product ... ?pid=00298 also has swirl hiding ability which can be put on after glaze.

I have got:

All usual car cleaning stuff, inc jet wash and snowfoam.

Just bought claybar
Just bought the glaze

I also have detailing spray, black carnauba wax, polymer sealer et, etc

Most of this has been impulse buys, not really used or used properly.

Which order would I use it all in. The snowfoam has wax in it btw.

I do 35000 motorway miles, so I need to do a winter crud clear off!

I'd also appreciate rough timescales and whether I'd need to do it all in one go, or if perhaps I could do one part on day, another the next etc, just so I can plan if I need to sneak a day off when swmbo is working so I won't be disturbed :)

Full Decon first. You'll usally need fallout remover and tar/bug remover also.

Spray the wheels with wheel.cleaner. soak and rinse off.
Pre wash if you have it. Rinse
Snowfoam. Clean wheels and very low.parts of car. Never go wheel.to car. Rinse
Clay can be used now...you'll always get a few more swirls here. But while car is wet is easy. Detail.spray or shampoo for .lube.

If it's taking too long or you have hard water dry down frost before claying then you will need to rinse and dry again.

When paint is decontaminated then polish. If you're using glaze here is good but it can lessen the life of the wax.

Layer the wax up..you want as few products underneath it as possible if you Want any longevity. Sealant at the end then detail spray. What sealant is it exactly?

All of that will take a fair few hours but it sounds like what you need is a machine polish and that can take 1-2 days on German paint.

You can hide the swirls with glazes and waxes but you'll. Be chasing your tail reapplying them frequently.

Good luck fellow Zummerzetonian!

Thanks. Something called 'auto glym' that I got on offer at the end of season last year. It was a three pack, wash, wax, polymer sealer although I use a different wax. It says the queen uses it, so it must be good :D

Is yours the nice blue D3 I see sometimes around the Puxton park area?

Good advice but if your paint is as bad as you say, I would get a professional to give the car an enhancement detail where they will give the car a good clean etc before machine polishing that hard German paint!

After that you probably won't need the Glaze but you can use all those lovely products you have to keep it looking like new! :D

Think these guys are quite expensive but this video will give you an idea of what detailing a car involves.
