Track day

Post by gazoo » Thu Sep 03, 2015 7:17 am

Does anyone fancy a track day in their beauty?

Has anyone done one before on Donnington track ?

How can this be arranged? I don't mind doing the legwork to arrange this.

Any thoughts anyone?

I have done a fair few in the B10 3.2 in the five years I have owned it, including trips to The Ring. I find the bigger the track the better so it can stretch its legs.

If you manage to sort something and works with my shift pattern I would more than likely attend.

Sytner has run trackdays in the past (at Donington and latterly Rockingham).

I have been discussing the possibility to do one next year - early days but it would be gauge people's interest in such an event.

In terms of arranging one - The issue is mainly the cost - I looked into this myself as I have run a number of wet handling days - but the upfront cost to hire a track is significant and the /car cost would be pretty high compared to one run by the dedicated trackday companies.

I've not done one for a while but did do a couple in my B10 in addition to the ones Sytner ran. As for the B8 she has visited the Ring a few times.

Thanks

Neil

I'm a fairly regular trackdayer in my Clio, not sure I'd want to chance the D3 on a general day unless it was somewhere very safe like Bedford or Rockingham.

Not sure what Donny's like in that regard as it's a bit too far north for me so I've never looked into it.

I know it's quite easy to get a discount from most TDOs for group bookings. MSV do a minimum of 10% discount for five drivers or more, for example:

----
Group discounts start for groups of five or more. The bigger your group gets, the more additional options can be added at request. Typically discounts are in line with the following:

5 Drivers or more - A garage free of charge as a base for you and your club/group. 10% discount for all customers

10 Drivers or more - A double garage free of charge as a base for you and your club/group. 10% discount for all customers Grid photo shoot on the track at lunchtime*

15 Drivers or more - A double garage free of charge as a base for you and your club/group. 10% discount for all customers Grid photo shoot on the track at lunchtime* A classroom theory session in your garage hosted by our instructors for your club/group*.

----

I can't imagine it would be anything other than extremely expensive to have a dedicated club day, but a decent group going to a normal day shouldn't break the bank. Might be able to sort a group discount for track day insurance too? I run without it on the Clio but that's only worth a couple of grand.

donnington os a cracking track but as the b10 is so quiet i find track use a bit boring as it just laps it up & you dont get the thrill

Donnington is a great track but hard work and hard on brakes tyres and suspension - as well as driver. Standard braked M3s and 135is were running out of brakes after 5 laps - my 330Ci had uprated discs, braided hoses and Redstuff pads and managed 10 laps before a stop was required (underwear change as well as brake/tyre cooling).

Also a bit scary in places with rather unforgiving stone walls in sight not far from track.

I was at Cadwell Park last weekend, passenger in my friends RX8. Very tight circuit but great fun. It was organised by Javelin Track days which he has used a few times and was well run.

A few years back (ok, quite a few years back) I organised a day at Llandow - which is arguably the cheapest track you'll find in the UK to hire.
http://www.llandow.com/exlusive-hire/

They have a relaxed atmosphere and the guy who runs the days makes sure it flows well, with limited numbers of track and the ability to stop proceedings and allow newbies out without fear. (We had a "wives" session).

I think there were only about 15 of us who went a few years back - which meant that we all got plenty of track time around people who were "comfortable" with each other. There were only 2 race/track spec cars there - my original race-car (which would dance on 2 wheels at the chicane) and a Radical.

IMHO you need to get solid commitment from at least 10 members (with a pencilled in date and deposits) before you commit any further.
(Location isn't ideal for Sytner support though)

BMW Car Club holds track days every year and I take part (but not with the ALPINA)
Usually I get a hire car
And the name is Marie-Noëlle or nick name MNL, NOT Marie or Noëlle ALONE; unless if you are looking for someone else and not me!!!

This is an offer from BMW Car Club, so I get the instructor with the car (E46 or E36 compact) and pay per lap. Of course if I damage the car, I have to pay for it, so I better be careful
