Is there a lack of meets due to the Anniversary ?

Post by Number5 » Sat Jul 11, 2015 12:34 am

I joined the this forum around January and it just seems to strike me that as everyone seems focused on the Anniversary meets and trips to Buchloe, that there doesn't seem to be much else going on domestically this year.

Is this a fair assumption, or just normal ?

Not sure, but there is Silverstone Classic, Alpinas taking centre stage of the BMW Car Club stand plus a parade lap, Carfest North and South coming up too, plus Gaydon National BMW Festival (I'm away on holiday then, so will miss this year).

Usually there is an annual meet at Sytners Nottingham later, but the invite doesn't look like it has come yet.

More towards Autumn and Winter. I generally mix with all BMWs though.

The chap who is the Alpina Register chairman is Simon (SPA69 on here) and he organises the Alpina section for the events, they are all officially part of BMW CCGB, I haven't been here long either but he is a very reliable guy.

Thanks John, I think you have highlighted the main events for me.

Like you say there is a lot going on and I for one wouldn't have any time to fit much more in this year.

I have done two trips to Europe in June, Bimmerfest15 in Venlo where we had 14 UK ALPINAs. Buchloe was amazing and we had quite a few UK cars in attendance.

Sherborne Classics at the Castle. 19th July. This was posted up in April with no replies.

Next up is silverstone Classic. I will be on site for 4 days setting up on the Thursday, we have 16 ALPINAs for the Friday, 65 Saturday, 23 Sunday.

Carfest Noth next. That's another 4 days for me, setup on the Thursday. Fri, Sat, Sun main event. STILL HAVE PLACES AVAILABLE FOR FRIDAY.

Gaydon is 16th August. For the first time in over 10 years I may not be there however someone will take my place to manage the ALPINA display.

Carfest South. Same set up as the North. NO PLACES AVAILABLE.

There are more 50 years celebrations in Europe.

Hopefully a Sytner meet before the end of the year.

There maybe a pre Christmas event. I have a plan forming and it will be different to previous years but I think it might be pretty good.

OK, Thanks for the replies and explanations.

So it seems that Alpina meets are all fairly official, ticket only affairs at big organised events, rather than a un-offical, lets all meet at X location and drive Y route, finishing up at Pub Z.

Thats fine. I suppose I was just expecting a few less formal South-West or North or midlands meets etc where a drive was involved rather than parade laps and static meets.

I thought perhaps the focus on the big 50 year thing may have taken the focus off the normal 'unofficial' get togethers ?

Given the rarity of Alpina's in the UK, the kind of get togethers and drives you mention are rarer than say the likes of the BMW or Merc clubs of the UK. You've also got to consider that only maybe 5% - 10% of owners would get involved with a club.

That said there is always a trip through the Welsh hills and some folk arrange runs themselves wiht a group of friends outside of the forums but aren't exclusive to Alpinas.

I've seen may be 3 Alpina's around my area (30-40 mile radius) in the last 3 or 4 years. I know a chap with an F30.

Stick a post up suggesting a run on a date starting at X point at Y time. Invite folk along - job done. If no-one turns up then your away for a ncie drive in a wonderful car... if folk do turn up then your still away for a nice drive in a wonderful car but with a chat at the end pub!
Nothing to see here.... move along in an orderly fashion please!

This is for the gentleman from Bristol area, lets not get too hung up on what is official or not, to get any serious number of people together with Alpina cars is not easy and therefore whatever the event is they have to deem it worthwhile. The trip to Venlo for example was not official a group of us got together and went, people came from Co Durham, Hampshire, Cambridge, Leicestershire, Kent, West Sussex and so on, because we want to.
The Buchloe trip was by invite and was open to people from this for forum, it was not to be missed and I cannot imagine any other organisation laying on the factory tour, evening 5 star meal and entertainment.

If you want to just meet with a few people then you will have to find them and unless you plan the route and it is something of interest, you will not get many people just turning up, it is naïve.

I could go on about other events, but I will not, look out for something that interests you and you will be made welcome, but unplanned ideas have little merit.

Thanks for your post Norrie. I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say there, but it just struck me that there doesn't seem to be many casual meets on this forum. i.e. Those that dont involve trips abroad , hotels or VIP invites.

Sure, its quite a prestigious thing to be invited by Alpina or Silverstone , etc and I applaud that and the organisers involved.

I was merely asking if without the 50th Anniversary events this year, there would normally be more 'regional' meets going on.

I am by no means waiting for someone else to do it for me. You may remember that I was the organiser of an event earlier this year involving 40+ Z4's including 5 Alpina Roadsters, so it is definitely possible to get Alpinas together for a days driving without the pomp & ceremony.

In terms of Alpina, I am not aware of any specific regional meets, to clarify again Buchloe was open to all from the register to apply and was free, you just had to get there.
Silverstone is open to all members and alpina owners could use a special code to get cheaper entry and a parade lap.
Sytner Nottingham annual meet, I go from Sussex and people come from all over UK.
Pre Xmas run last year from Warwickshire through Cotswolds, we came from all over for it.
The South Gloucs show just by Bristol 1 & 2 August 15, I am going, we had 5 alpina.
I go to the pub meet 55 miles each way, we are lucky we have 6 people with 8 Alpina cars extremely rare.

Thanks Norrie,
Im out of the UK for the South Glos and Silverstone events, but interested in the Sytner Nottingham event if held in September.

The Pre-Xmas drive sounds a possibility too.

I think Matt will try and have a meet at Nottingham in Sept, I will ask him when I see him next week. However, there is the Klein-Heiligkreuz starting at Kleinsassen near Fulda Germany for Alpina on 19th Sept and then the M & G meet from Anderlecht to Kortijk-Aalbeke on 26th Sept 15.
