Restrictions on Cleaning your car in Germany

Post by B10BRW » Fri Jun 12, 2015 6:55 pm

For those who wish to have a nice clean Alpina for Alpinas 50th should be aware that it is Verboten to wash/detail your car on public roads, this also extends to drives, car parks and anywhere else not in a designated car wash.
You are not even allowed to clean it outside your own Garage or on your drive.

You will find a car wash at;
V Markt
Justus-Von Liebig Str 1
D86807
Buchloe

Open 0800 to 2000hrs

Get scrubbing

why have they put this law in place, is there a drought or something or is because it makes the place look untidy?

This may be the case but for the last 13 years whilst going to The Ring I have seen cars cleaned, on the road side on driveways on garage forecourts, seem a lot of Germans ignore it.

I was always of the understanding that the law governing the no cleaning of cars in public places (except commercial designated car washes) applied only on a Sunday and was part of the same legislation that also states you cannot mow your lawn on a Sunday
Nothing to see here.... move along in an orderly fashion please!

car washing

Post by Norrie » Mon Jun 15, 2015 12:26 pm

I guess those that have been invited to the factory 50th, would not wish to cause any upset to the locals or to the hosts. The organiser pointed me firmly in the director of the aforementioned cash jet wash place which is 5 minutes from the factory.

I cant enter into a debate about the correctness of the statement in general, but think it would be polite to conform for this event?

I also had a message from the organiser at Alpina saying there is no need to remove items from the vehicle for concours judgement.

Ok what is the stance on waterless detail products?

As these do not put any waste water into the subtract what so ever.

Do not shoot me I am just asking as after driving to all that way I am sure my car will need a clean of some sort. Also the local car wash is going to be packed as we all care for our Alpinas.

car cleaning germany

Post by Norrie » Tue Jun 16, 2015 3:36 pm

Ok this is not official, but taking advice from a German Alpina owner friend. It would appear that the no cleaning was a two fold situation, one which incorporated no servicing your car, oil changes, brake fluid and so on, the second was a bit like no washing out or no lawn mowing, so to keep things nice.

There is a car cleaning place 5 minutes from the factory, however this is likely to be packed out.

I think that sensible cleaning and polishing will take place and we shall have to see what exactly the reaction will be?

I did ask the factory to confirm exactly their procedure for concours and what they did or did not judge. Await a response.

The reason behind the legislation is to reduce risk of contamination of natural ground water, although with the car wash ban it has been taken over the top.
Same as with petrol stations, places where you can wash your car now require facilities to catch and recycle the used water instead of allowing it to subtract into the ground unscreened. In terms of the car wash, it will probably not be much more than a good hard rain shower would wash off, but it's the law. Engine washes (for those who do it) ok, but normal wash shouldn't have been a problem.

Enforcement is patchy, but German authorities are better equipped for on the spot fines than in the UK. waterless is no problem

Just over the border, here is what we can do:
- Wash cars on private property as long as it doesn't generate noise in the "Quiet times"
- Perform car maintenance on private property as long as it doesn't generate noise in the "Quiet times"

The key is "private property" as the vast majority live in apartments it means most go to the jet-wash booths or use a car wash - both generate noise and both don't tend to be open on Sunday. Furthermore only a few have "hot water" dispensers allowing you to "wet" the car with jet wash, hand wash it and then rinse the car.

I am rather glad we have a house now with suitable cash washing spot!
