Switchtronic gearbox overhaul

Post by b10brian » Mon Jul 07, 2014 11:45 pm

I had a slipping torque converter fault develop recently and whilst still drive able decided to have a refurb on the gearbox (major overhaul kit) which included the TC, clutch plates and central bearing with the oil flushed and fresh oil.

Outcomes
No high pitch whine on the lower gears acceleration
More responsive acceleration particularly noticeable in the higher gears
Really smooth gear changes all the time (I had the occasional thud and reverse was always a bit clunkier)
Fuel consumption has been reduced by about 20% so it should pay for itself in 18 months at current mileage rates. I got 28.5 over a 400 mile round trip on the motorway where time was of the essence and we were fully laden. It's not going under 25 with the school run thrown into the mix :)

Very pleased with A1 Premier up in Biggleswade who offer a 12 month warranty and a true specialisation on gearboxes, diffs and the like. With 18 bays they still gave me a personal service and recognising an Alpina refurbished my gearbox.

Going to France in August in the car so I feel the gearbox will be ok now for this trip.

What was the cost if you don't mind me asking.
On a mission to burn as much fossil fuel as possible before it runs out.

Hi, what were the symptoms of the TC? And how many miles has your car done?

Thanks Paul

Car is on 106k miles and as stated had a whine in hard acceleration first and second. Also the autologic reported slip and the consumption lead to diagnosis. As the symptoms build up over time until you have had it sorted its easy to miss.
