That will be the problem then - after a proper service, and oil put in, I did 800 miles in a day

You need to do a proper run to "cure" it, and you should not do small runs where the car isn't allowed to properly warm up (if you have to, drive off, and when you get to destination leave it running a while - the 3.3 needs about 15 miles to get up to "proper" running temps)

15 miles in London? That'll take about 4 hours then! Yes, it's quite likely the short runs are doing it no favours. Problem is that I tell my wife not to use it for short trips (it's our only car) but she says "what's a car for if I can't use it" and gets annoyed, then suggests we should get rid of it and get a proper car. I know she only says that second part to wind me up, but it works.

Although most trips are short the car is usually running for at least 20 mins, even if that's mostly moving relatively slowly through traffic with the odd burst. The oil usage was just as high when I was giving it a decent run twice a day to work and back and that was after the oil change.

The alternative is to get a crappy car for the runaround, and use the spare cash for a Roadster S for fun, but I can't bare the thought of driving anything less. I'd rather keep my beautiful B10 AND get a Roadster S. Oh yes, but that's for another day. Two cars doing even less frequent short journeys. Poor things. That's one of the reasons I insist on getting my cars serviced once a year regardless of whether they're due or not.

Toby I am also in London and if I can find the car I am looking for could you tell me who you use to service yours.
Will also be doing a fairly low mileage but that could change if I can get my hands on the right car.

Hi, there's two threads discussing this very topic:

I'll be giving Birds a call when my next service is due. I've not had any direct experience of them so far, but what I've heard from here and others is very good.

I'd suggest going out to Yorkshire every other weekend then  just to get some use into it.

Mind you if you can live with the cost of the Oil, then who cares ...

Hi bakerk, thanks for the info, I am going to try and hang on for one with a lower mileage thoughI realise I might be looking for a long time.

Thanks I will keep a note of them for when I find a car!
It looks like patience is needed when looking for this model but with so few made it's understandable.
Is there any bmw dealer that would be worth me getting in touch with to see if they know of any coming up for sale.
