South Central Meet at The Vyne

Post by B9-200 » Tue May 01, 2007 10:06 am

Right then, finally got my @rse into gear and checked out The Vyne yesterday.

Basically it is a 16th-century house and estate and "a treasure trove of history", consisting of
Impressive 16th-century house, dating back to Henry VIII's reign
Large country-park with gardens, lake, meadows, woods and wetlands
Rare treasures from 350 years of continuous family ownership
Tudor chapel with extraordinary Renaissance stained glass

The estate is situated in 452 hectares (1120 acres) and is made up of the formal grounds with lake around the house, woodland, parkland and farmland.

As the restaurant only seats around 60 people and gets quite busy, if people wish for all of us to eat in there we would need firm numbers in order for tables to be set aside. From personal experience of these type of informal forum meet-ups there are very rarely firm numbers as some drop out and others appear at the last minute, so what I suggest is that as the facilities are there we opt for a picnic option instead. However, there is also a kiosk in the tea garden that serves teas, coffees, sandwiches, cakes etc.

Unfortunately they would not be able to set aside part of the car park for us, but from what I observed yesterday if some of us get there early enough we should be able to establish ourselves in the overflow car park/picnic area. If anyone has one gazebos are allowed.

Suggested dates are as follows (all weekends)
19th/20th May
2nd/3rd June
30th June/1st July

The Vyne is situated just off the A340 at Sherborne St John, near Basingstoke.

That's 150 miles away up north, and if it's not the most popular date it won't get chosen (democracy in action! :) ).

Hmmmm, I tend to support Neil on this. It doesn't make sense to me to introduce conflicting dates for meets unnecessarily. If 1st July is chosen by some for this meet, that rules out the option of going to both, which some may otherwise wish to do.

Good idea. How about the second last Sunday of August. i.e. 19/8/07?

Clashes with "Airbourne". The only weekend I can make around that time is 1st/2nd September.

It's one of the weekends when they don't have any special events on so it might be okay, but you run the risk of any weekend being busy at that time of year I guess.
