F10 coolant issues and a possible BMW recall.

Post by D3orbust » Wed Oct 10, 2018 1:02 pm

My D5 is going in for a repair with the mechanic who has looked after both my alpina's, the problem is with the coolant and MPG.

I've had to top up the coolant a few times in the past few months, MPG idntbwhat it used to be and there's sometimes a 'sweet' smell in the cabin when driving.

Before ringing the garage to book in a repair I came across this article;

https://www.bmwblog.com/2018/08/08/bmw- ... in-the-eu/

Would It affect D5 owners?
B5 G30 number 332 (development car)

D5 number 21

D3MT number 284 (gone but will be sadly missed)

Keep us posted, but the short answer to your question is yes, it will affect Alpina owners - D3, D4 & D5 variants.

My car is number 13, yours is 21 - the article refers to cars built from July 2012 to June 2015. My car was built in March 2012 IIRC.

How much has your MPG been affected?

Thanks Aiden, is this a common failure on the I6 engines?

Mostly 4cylinders but noticed a few 6's starting to aswell

Currently there is an outstanding Quality Enhancement for some models (not a recall) for some to be replaced, some to be removed, inspected and the mixing tube (pipe) to be cleaned/renewed, but if dampness is found inside the cooler its to be replaced

Thanks for the replies. Is it worth changing for peace of mind, or are failures rare and so a case of wait for it to fail as it might not?
