Buying a D3 in Germany

Post by gtiz52006 » Wed Nov 07, 2018 10:18 pm

Hi All,

I've been lurking on the forum for a few days now and have been reading with interest about Alpina. There is no denying Alpinas look rather special: for the discerning observer;)
I wonder if I can get some input from owners on whether a D3 Allroad 2015-16 (planning to import one from Germany to Switzerland) can be serviced at a local BMW garage and if the 10 year BMW service/maintenance plan applies to Alpina. Currently, the only official Alpina importer for Switzerland, is in Liechtenstein(about 330km from Lausanne - my city).
The vehicles I am considering are from 2015 onward and there is one with a very high mileage, for the year - 168K km. I imagine that this would hardly be an issue for such as strong engine but still, should I be looking at lower mileage examples for peace of mind?

Currently, I own a 2015 A45 AMG but I am getting tired of the always "On" nature/character of the car and the D3 ticks all boxes for me, at least on paper having never driven one....

Thank you very much in advance for your time and help! Vik

Any BMW service centre can look after an ALPINA. If specialist info is required, it's freely given by Buchloe.

'Always on' cars lost their sheen to me some years ago. Silk with steel available on demand is far easier to live with.....

I'm sure F3x D3biturbo owners will add further. The 10 year plan is something I've not come across in the UK: this may be specific to your area so feedback here may be limited.
Current:
23MY Porsche Macan GTS in Papaya
23MY Cupra Born V3 77kW in Aurora

Previously loved:
ALPINA: E91 B3SBiturbo #127, E92 B3SBiturbo #285, E90 D3Biturbo #097, E85 Roadster S #168 & variety of 'beige' 4 and 6-cyl BMW lumps.
PORSCHE: Macan S, Cayman 981 S, Cayman 981 GTS

Hi Vik

Welcome to the forum.

Never heard of the 10 year plan either - sounds amazing!

Any BMW main dealer can look after the car. High mileage isn't necessarily bad, but be careful as obviously more things can be worn due to those miles and these diesel engine are quite complex.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome to the Alpina Forum!
This is very helpful input indeed. Makes me even more eager to make the switch. I might have to sell my car privately first as trade-in value of the A45 is on the low side, and understandably so.
As for the 10 years or 100'000 plan - this is part of the BMW Switzerland/Liechtenstein pricing structure: it is availabe across the entire BMW range and it includes free service and repairs (according to the BMW recommended service plan; however, liquids, break pads and discs are excluded). in addition, one can prolong this service plan to 4 (200K km)or 5 (200K km) years to the tune of between 640 and 1410 CHF respectively (based on a BMW 335d xdrive touring configuration). Having spoken with a German BMW-Alpina dealer, this service plan does not seem to be available in Germany and it won't transfer to Switzerland. Alpina Switzerland does not seem to offer the service, at least by browsing on their website; but have not spoken with the dealer directly yet. The good news is that I can service an imported car at any BMW authorized dealer/service center, as you confirmed above.

I have to say that Alpina HQ were super professional in responding to my query stating the same for the BMW ability to service Alpina cars.

To be continued, once I make the switch, hopefully soon;) Cheers, Vik

Good luck with the search, keep us posted.

Interesting set up offered on the service plan and how it varies from country to country.

We see it here in the UK with a 2 year warranty on ALPINAs compared to 3 years in Europe, I believe

I had thought about buying a newer BMW and the 10 year plan for servicing, parts and ancillaries, with global cover was available to me to purchase i.e. no matter what country I might bring the vehicle to afterwards, I would still be able to avail myself of the extended cover I opted for and bought at the time of initial purchase.

Never did check to see if that warranty was or would be transferable to anyone else to whom I may sell the vehicle within that 10 year timeframe.

It’s a regular BMW option and I’m surprised it’s not offered in The UK from new.
