Alpina Mk4 DVD navigation system repair

Post by Rav » Thu Jul 05, 2018 9:02 am

Hi All.

The mk4 DVD based navigation system does not work in my car. I have tried brand new OE DVDs and still no luck. I have read that the DVD laser wears out and the next step is to replace this.
I have found the part needed for around £20 and instructions on how to do this.

Whilst I am planning to do this, i thought I would offer up the my help if anyone else is in the same position as me. I could help with repairing this.

Please let me know.

I plan to create my own write up for this forum.

No experience of this Rav, but I've read the same.

Looked on forums/youtube? Bound to be loads of other write ups out there.

I ordered a new DVD drive from BMW in 2016 for just under £100, it did solve the problem. They were cheaper on eBay but I thought the cost was reasonable, interested to see what you got for your money 😊

What i really need to try and a working disc, so i can be sure that my dvd player is faulty.
At the moment i have two unknowns.

Is there anyone local to me (Wiltshire) who has a working Mk4 DVD nav system?

My mk4 nav had a fault where it always said input was reading the disk. I opened it up and put a new laser in, still doesn't work!!

Easy enough DIY, just a few blobs of solder to remove to lift a cover off

Good luck 👍

Rav,

Have a look at M3cutters - Might be worth contacting Baris at Carphonics. He's well-known for BMW Nav and audio repairs. I've used him and was happy with the repair/upgrade work.

Hope that helps,

Hi, I wouldn't worry about wasted hours, it may get the nav unit working again and the fix is cheap, whereas a new mk4 nav is mega bucks.

I took it all apart and read the code off the laser pick up itself, to make sure I bought the correct replacement

Baris will however do a better job I'm sure 😉, he seems to be the go-to guy for this

Best of luck
