Power Steering Pump costs?

Post by Raj » Mon Mar 19, 2018 11:17 am

Hey,

Has anyone had a power steering pump replaced on a E46?

I've having my B3 recovered to RSJ Motors in Birmingham today to get it fixed. Unsure of what I should expect for costs.

They charged me £450 ish for the o-ring replacement a few months back.

Cheers

The problem is that it's a PITA to access - either done from the top by removing the inlet manifold or from underneath which may require removing the steering rack (but I'm not sure about that last bit).

Either way, the labour charge may exceed the parts, I'm afraid.

I'm sure Simon13 will be along with a much better idea of the work involved as he has had his car apart far more than I have

that doesn't surprise me! I keep telling myself that I'll use this car to learn about a proper engine, have all the equipment and do the work myself.

but... not quite there. Apparently it's a common fault with the e46. Shame.

Thanks

I replaced one on my B3s cab, super easy, done from underneath, undertray off, drain, belt off, pipes off, couple of bolts, swap the pulley over put back on, refill and bleed the system by going from lock to lock a few times.

Just make sure you get the right pump, there is more than one variant of the same type that have differing amounts of assistance, the specs are on a silver sticker/plate on the pump body.
