D3 biturbo tourer roofbox

Post by Vxrich » Wed Nov 01, 2017 11:15 pm

Hi I'm looking at upgrading my tatty old roof box that occasionally goes on my 2011 D3 Biturbo tourer. Was hoping to get something bigger as 2 boxer dogs now take up the boot space! Having looked about it seems that the Thule Motion XT XL is an option and would give me almost half as much storage space but just a bit concerned about the overhang above the windscreen. It's 215cm long and can't seem to find any safety advice regards to overhang. Anybody else use this box or any other model? Cheers

Have you considered the BMW OEM one?

I've used this roofbox on the B3S on an occasional basis and not had any problems with the overhang at the front:

In case you are interested, this is what we managed to pack in that box

I also had to carry all the spares for the TVR

Hi Charles

That's excellent thanks, you don't travel light! Do you know which Thule model that is please? The oem box is actually quite well priced tbf, may be an option

Off the top of my head, I haven't a clue - we bought it many years ago around 2000.

Size wise, I think its just over 2m long as the main supports for our "tent" were that long and fitted snugly end to end in the box.

As for travelling light, I can confirm that a 4mx8m garden marquee is ideal for four chaps on a Le Mans weekend - half the tent was our sleeping area and the other half was the lounge. What you can't see is the glitter ball suspended from the rafters :D

Haha excellent set up! I think the Thule XT xl is 215cm long so would look sit pretty much like yours which looks fine to me. Out of interest, does it create alot of wind noise? Cheers

Possibly, but I find that increasing the revs above 3500rpm when the exhaust butterfly opens up, then the combined induction roar and exhaust note tends to drown out any wind noise from the roofbox
