Canadian GP 2008 - Hamilton ran into the back of Kimi's Ferrari in the pitlane as Kimi was stationary for a red light at the end of the pitlane. Both drivers retired from the race and i think Hamilton only got a 10 place grid penalty for the next GP. The outcome of that incident could have been a lot worse say if a marshal had been walking across the end of the pitlane.

Looks like the FIA are going to investigate further now as they are not happy with Vettel not accepting he has done wrong. Think he should just come out and accept his wrong-doing before the FIA sanction a more severe penalty that could be as harsh as a race ban.

Good result for Red Bull, once again Ricciardo was there to pick up a race win as the front runners were having a bad day. Verstappen must be kicking himself as he seemed to be the quickest Red Bull driver over the weekend but engine issues forced his retirement. Kimi/Bottas/Force India/Williams were all in with a shout for the win but failed to take advantage.

I'm hoping there is no further action against Vettel and that the battle can continue in Austria...

From what I can understand, the FIA investigation is in response to the fact that Vettel was on a warning for bringing the sport into disrepute when he effed and blinded at Charlie Whiting at the end of the Mexico GP last year.

So Vettel was in front of the FIA yesterday and they have confirmed Vettel will face no further action. The right decision in my opinion.

Let the battle commence in Austria this weekend...

Austrian GP = Bottas wins, Vettel extends lead after Hamilton's weekend is compromised with a gearbox penalty.

Cant help but wishing there were a few extra laps to the GP as Vettel could possibly have passed Bottas for the win. Equally Hamilton would most probably have taken 3rd from Ricciardo but Ferrari and Vettel in particular looked to have a pace advantage on the supersoft tyre in the 2nd stint.

What about that start from Bottas? 0.201 of a second reaction time to the lights going out. Think that will go down as the quickest in F1 history although at the time i was hoping Bottas would get a jump-start penalty.

All-in-all Bottas is back in the championship hunt giving Mercedes the headache of having two drivers challenging whilst Ferrari have only Vettel to concentrate on.

British GP next weekend, anyone from here attending Silverstone next weekend?

Hamiltons gear box problem was probably caused by Vettel ramming him :(
The FIA were never going to penalise Vettel further, not with a ex Ferrari man as president.

Mercedes themselves have ruled that out, the contact in Baku had no bearing on the gearbox issues Hamilton suffered in Austria: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/130608

I very much doubt Jean Todt is in a position to hand out favors to his ex-employers Ferrari. Why would he anyway? He now heads the FIA and has no ties with Ferrari at all.

Ah but didn't Bernie always say that Ferrari HAVE to be in F1 - which is why the other teams grumble about their preferential treatment?

And yes I know that Bernie is no longer in charge ...

Ferrari are a big part of F1 as are McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull etc... I don't recall any "preferential treatment" for Ferrari over the years. Schumacher was disqualified from the whole of the 1997 championship after his tangle with Villeneuve at Jerez.

Bernie's comments have been the same about Red Bull when they have threatened to quit F1 on a number of occasions due to Mercedes domination. Red Bull wanted a rule change and engine equalization due to the Renault engine being down on power against the Mercedes, Bernie said at the time "It will be good for the sport if Red Bull stay in F1, we definitely do not want them to leave".

Hamilton wins the British GP and cuts Vettel's lead down to just 1 point. Ferrari need a good result in Hungary as Mercedes now seem to have the championship momentum. Ferrari will be looking for answers as the Mercedes were quicker throughout practice, qualifying and the race at Silverstone.

Of those that have voted majority say Vettel will win the drivers championship but i think Hamilton has become the new favorite, whats peoples current thoughts?

Vettel claimed Hamilton brake-tested.

Ferrari claimed Bottas jump started.

Both proven wrong and Mercedes gathering pace and momentum.
Being Ferrari mad it's hard for me to say but i do agree. Ferrari just need to get the act together and a few positive upgrades on engine and aero should see them consistently challenging the Mercs. The car started the season off as the quickest but Ferrari seem to be falling behind in the development race throughout the season.

The FIA have made the 'Halo' compulsory for 2018. I for one ain't to keen on the idea. I understand its for the safety of the drivers but for me it's a big 'NO', it just doesn't look right on an F1 car. Anyone else got an opinion on this?

What a farce the Hungarian GP was, Ferrari ruining another race and Vettel gifted another win.
kimi raikkonen must be spitting teeth not being able to race properly with a faster and better car.
At least Mercedes had the decency to let Lewis race with the faster car, and for him to give the place back after he was unable to get past the mobile chicanes the Ferraris became.

Ferrari mantra, Vettel must win at all cost, sod the paying public

Ferrari did what was right for the team. They wanted to maximise the advantage in both drivers and constructors championships. After poor results compared to Vettel Kimi knows his job is to protect Vettel and try and bring home the constructors championship for the team. Irvine, Barrichello and Massa have all played similar roles in the past for Ferrari and there lead drivers - That's just how they operate and i'm certain the drivers will have it in black & white in there contracts.

Vettel had to nurse his car after the steering issue but that didn't stop Mercedes from going for the win. The nature of the cars and track meant that Mercedes could not pass the Ferrari's even at the slower pace they were running. Only on a few occasions did Hamilton get into the DRS zone behind Kimi and even then it's not as if he was all over the back of him attacking to make the move. The Mercs do seem to be affected more when compared to other cars by the turbulent air when following another car and this has been highlighted before on other circuits, maybe Mercedes need to address that if they can. Hamilton was given the opportunity to attack the Ferrari's but couldn't get close enough to mount a challenge.

Now the summer break is here and overall it's been an exciting first half of the season. Vettel leads Hamilton by 14 points, Mercedes lead Ferrari by 39 points. 4 drivers across 3 teams have won a GP. 4 drivers across 2 teams have claimed pole.

Bring on Spa and the second half of the season.....
