1998 e39 b10 v8, got vanos or not?

Post by ad_b10v8 » Wed Apr 19, 2017 12:15 am

as title really, does my car have vanos?
from the drivers seat / bum dyno it just drives like it has a tasty cam really.

Also and more importantly when fully warmed up there is a bit of a knocking noise present at idle towards the top of the engine. When i first drove it I assumed this was just vanos knock (like every 540 i've ever met) but after a bit of googling there seams to be mixed messages whether 98MY b10v8's even have vanos

any help greatly appreciated

Hi,

I'm no expert but I think it may depend on what year/engine type your car is based on as there was change in 98 where the V8 power was upped slightly that may have been as a result of the inclusion of Vanos on the later engine.

Happy to be corrected though

Sorry that doesn't really answer your specific question though
Regards,

James

whipped the oil cap off and went on a journey through time and space (alright around the timing gear) with a friends endoscope - no vanos to be found, cam position/speed sensor completely different tooth design, and then digging a bit further on the the outside of the engine found no vanos solinode hiding below cam sensor and the intake pipe.

conclusion, I have one of the last 340(ish) bhp non-vanos engine b10v8 based on the first M62 bmw engine.

time to get my self an automotive stethoscope to narrow the noise down a bit further

FYI: ALPINA stop production of the non-VANOS at the end of October 1998
Oscar Wilde & Burkard Bovensiepen: I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.

There's also a procedure to bleed any air out of the lifters. Run at 3000rpm for 3 min, if it doesn't work try a couple more times.
