My Alpina is poorly and needing lots done

Post by SkiNNeR » Thu Mar 23, 2017 1:59 am

My Roadster S is in pretty bad shape and off the road at the moment. due to the fact i need.............. wait for it lol... front and rear pads, Brake disks fron and back, front drop links, 4 tyres, interior Hand brake mechanism, Plus the handbrake shoes. New plastic under tray for the nearside wheel arch. I need new plastic under tray for the front. a new splitter... maybe a new front bumper aswell. Kidney grills...... I might not actually bother with the splitter... because they too fragile. Also the roof motor i think has eventually given in. And my Yuassa battery which is a year old and now failing and a i can't find the dam receipt :((((, it's due its MOT soon and i want to get it ready for the summer.

I don't want to put cheap parts on the car as i never plan to sell this on... i've already upgraded the clutch and all suspension parts to the bilstein pro kit, plus replaced all the bushes and wishbones etc.

I'm wondering about brake pads and brake disks...? any recommendations? i was going to get EBC Yellowstuff pads but i don't know which disks to buy, plus where to find all these other parts.. having a lot of trouble sourcing bits

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm planning to fully respray the car also, (wheels already been refurbed)

Cheers

Why not try the breakers for some of the plastic undertrays and liners, they are only going to score again from new and cant be seen.

I have used Quarry Motors and FAB Direct, they both have a good mail order service, there are others that specialise.

For the brakes bits I've just changed the front discs and pads on the M3, dealers prices where over £1000 but I've fitted Pagid alternatives from ECP, I'm not going to track the car so saved around £400 for the front end alone. Braking performance is better than before, although the discs were well worn  .

For the roof motor you can buy again from breakers, they usually offer a 30-90 day warranty just in case but it may be available from ECP or GSF too as an OEM part.

Battery: I found Tanya Batteries having very competitive prices and bought a Varta Battery from there.

Due to Alpina cherry-picking from the BMW parts bin the front setup uses Z4M/E46 M3 pads on a Z4 3.0Si disc (also used on most of the E46 330 variants) - I know the Alpina predates the 3.0Si & Z4M but so do the BMW parts

The front discs are 325mm and OEM part # 1 166 071
The front pads are ATE part # 13.0460-7185.2

Rear discs and pads are the same as the pre-facelift 3.0 Z4 so don't require any special consideration

many of the consumables are available from the bmw value line which is surprisingly good value - just depends on how insistent you are on originality

as above, fab and quarry carry lots of stock and try leebman in germany - even with shipping their prices are good

Hi, please don't give up on this car. The Z4 forum is full of info and the 2nd hand prices of this car are shooting out the roof. I spent a few days sorting out a friends roof motor. They get immersed in water and short out but do not burn out. It's a fortune to repair going the root of removing the top but there are some indies who can remove these motors and relocate them in the boot for 200 or around. I managed to get the motor/pump unit out by access from the boot. The casing holding the motor was held rigidly by cable ties and would not budge. However the casing lid is held down by gaffer tape and aching arms and working blind you can get the lid prised off and the pump can be lifted out. Zero cost and one happy friend. The motor is easily separated, washed and dried at 80C in the oven. The wife was a bit pissed at the smell from the oven.

RE the roof motor, look on the Z4-forum. There are a few guys that will relocate your roof motor into the boot (unobtrusive, at the side, behind a panel). They can also resurrect a failed motor in many instances. Cost for relocation, which doesn't involve removing the roof, is around £80 for a couple of the guys.

And totally agree, don't give up on the car!

I've got full EBC set up on my B8 and it works very well.
I use their USR Slotted Discs and Yellow Stuff pads and I find it very good.
Warm up quickly, not too much dust, and when you need to stand on the pedal brings the speed down quickly and safely.
