330i Touring project will a M52 fit

Post by B10BRW » Thu Oct 22, 2015 7:17 pm

Bought a 2001 330i Touring as it needed some work, which I was quite happy to have done.
Unfortunately it has turned out to be a lot more of a project than I hoped.
The engine has developed a loud knocking :? , big ends has been suggested.
Trying to source an engine is proving to be expensive, more than I paid for the car.
Does anyone know if the M52 engine from a 5 series would fit, or a M54 2.5 as they seem to be half the price.

Help

The 2.8 and 2.3 latter engines were fitted to both the 3 and 5 series.

Likewise the 2.5 M54 unit was also in the 3 and 5 series as was the M54 3.0 unit.

Couldn't tell you about mounting points in both but I suspect they would be interchangable between the car series.
Nothing to see here.... move along in an orderly fashion please!

there is a huge difference between the engines electrically.
I have had a few E30s with engine conversions and the M52 is the most popular choice.
The M54 is a bigger ball ache to transplant because of all the advanced electronics
M54 of 2.5 or 3.0 is the best way forward even if it comes out of an E39 or E53 it'll still work and be less hassle than an M52
