Insurance quandry

Post by v8 ego » Fri Oct 02, 2015 9:57 pm

Evening folks,

I have an Admiral multicar policy that I renewed back in May 2015. The renewal payment was, I thought, taken from my credit card that they have on file. I have received an email from them this evening and it appears that they didn't take the payment and are now asking for it and to contact them within 7 days to pay.

So, does anyone know what my consumer rights are given that they didn't take the money when I had it allocated?
Regards,

James

http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/c ... laints.htm - if you have direct evidence the money left your account, & they've taken all this time to contact you, leaving you uninsured & liable to prosecution, I'd read up on this link asap. I'd just double check it's a genuine email, though, before going nuclear...

So, as far as I have been able to work out, they never took the payment and I have remained insured. All my cars are insured on MID but I was wondering what my rights are given that they haven't taken payment at point of sale and we are now 5 months on.

James

I don't understand the question, what outcome are you trying to achieve?

I am trying to understand whether the insurance company has a right to demand a payment so long after the renewal. Not averse to paying it as I have had the insurance but surely one would expect to pay for something when you get it and not 5 months after?

If it was after the insurance period had ended then I would suggest that you shouldn't bother responding. However, you are in the middle of the period and you are receiving benefit now for a service delivered now.

It's not really any different to the bill I received from my knee consultant last week for an appointment I had back in May. In his case, he sends an invoice after the event and the expectation is that it is paid upon receipt.

To me this is sounds like a case of incompetence in terms of the credit control department - something that has slipped through the net and has now been picked up. In today's computer age, we would expect all of this to be done automatically but errors do happen and so long as you are receiving the service agreed upon then the only issue here is that your insurer has been slow in collecting payment.

As Charles has said. You are in receipt of insurance cover that is ongoing. Therefore there is no reason why you should not pay for it.

If you had chosen to pay in monthly instalments you would still be paying until the insurance period ends.

They have made an error, but surely you cant expect them to just give you free cover for a year as a result!

HI Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I did speak to Admiral this morning and I wasn't looking for free cover however, they acknowledged it was their fault and were prepared to do nothing about it. I have settled my bill but I am not minded to renew with them next year given they dropped the ball and didn't even have the decency to say sorry :(

James

I don't really see the problem, you've still got what you paid for at the agreed price. They probably don't see themselves as having anything to apologise for - "payment wasn't made, so we'd rather like our money please"

Insuring with Admiral is usually very cheap, but in general they are a bunch of useless cretins IMO. I'm with them purely because they are so damn cheap for Alpinas. I dread having to claim through them, but fingers crossed.......

It's not as bad as you might expect - having had to do so earlier this year.

They outsource their claim handling to a company called Albany who seem to have a clear process that they follow and are good at communicating with the insured.
