Alpina Depreciation

Post by Charles » Tue Feb 15, 2005 1:55 pm

Last week there was a thread running talking about the price of an Alpina on eBay and it got me thinking....

Given the rarity value of Alpina's and also given that most Car Price Guides have no mention of Alpina's, how does one go about pricing an Alpina?

The standard BMW scales, in my opinion, are not applicable.

For example, what should I put on the screen for my car (IF i were selling it which I am not):

March 2003, Alpina B3S Touring, £45k new, 58,000 miles, FABMWSH, one of only nine in the UK

Thoughts please folks

I know I was told when I bought my B10 3.3 it was suppose to have similar depreciation to the V8 models (e.g. Worse than the other straight sixes).

As Alpina’s get Older (Over 3 years without BMW Warranty) People tend to be a bit scared of the cost of parts and running cost so I think they take a bigger hit than std BMs People like Sytners can get top Money for 2nd Hand Alpina’s but the 2nd Hand private market/Independent garages Cars tend to stick around for a while if people ask a to higher price.
But like every car if you have a Top spec well looked after model and find the right person at the right time who knows what you can achieve.
Take Munich Legends they just sold a 97 B10 V8 57,000 miles for (asking price £16,950) Yet Fourtrade have a 2000W B10 V8 88,000 miles for sale at £12995.

So would it be fair to say that depreciation is in the eye of the purchaser?

Yes, or in the eye of the vendor! I have come to the view that my car is worth far more than I could sell it for. What else would I buy? I had a drive in a Porsche 996 C4 this weekend, and I have to say I could not think of a sensible reason to sell the B10 and buy that. So why sell it? At least while it is still in fine fettle! There will come a time, but it will not be governed by depreciation.
Regards
Simon

I was informed that a B5 2 1/2 years old with approx 15k on the clock is worth PX on a new one about £40k, but I suspect i bit lower, I would say that any big V8 will drop at least 50% + in the first 3 years.

My suggestion is stil enjoy it and try and px it rather than sell direct, the dealer always wins (well 95% of the time).

I think the D3 holds it own against the 320/325d but probably due to having zero discount on the asking price.

The B3 is a little bit more than a fully specced 335i (around 46k I think) but so much more in way of what you get but the 335i has lost most of it's value after 3 years old.

The B5 residual is horrendous but so are all the big engined 5 series. Love to buy one but a, it's to big for Jan and b, the cost of repair if it goes wrong, which unfortunately it does too often on this web site.

I was speaking to Matt today and he pointed to 4 on loan just returned 4litre 6 series and specced to 80K with low miles, and forecourt price is now 40K, so I guess the Alp 6 series would fair slightly better.

When I bought mine, the rule of thumb was about 15-25% less than the equivalent M car.
