Giving up smoking.

Ok we have one - here's an opportunity to have one - if you got a point of view about something and want to share it - here's where you do it.

Giving up smoking.

Post by Dunk » Sat Jul 19, 2008 11:18 pm

Something snapped in me a while back. A long story, but one of those life-altering little events occured which brought a number of things into sharp focus.

Not least of all being my general state of health.

My Grandad smoked until the day he died, and my Father smoked until the day he died.

Both of them great men, the greatest men I've ever known.

So I smoked.

20 or more a day for the last 16 years.

Thursday morning I awoke to find something else had snapped inside my head. I decided to quit smoking.

So, having savoured my last ever tab at 11am, I slapped on a nicotine patch and haven't touched one since.

I'm rather chuffed with myself so far.

Immediate changes from being smoke free for 48+ hours are evident - skin less greasy by the end of the day, not stinking, lungs starting to clean themselves out, and just generally feeling better due to less dopamine knocking about in my system.

Best wishes Dunk, you know it is the right decision.

Having never smoked myself I cannot appreciate how difficult it must be for you to do this although I would have a serious problem cutting down on food or beer. :D

CONGRATS Dunk!
One thing that helped me was that i'd read somewhere that the craving only lasts for 30 seconds.
That was 7 years ago, and that thought still works today.
Once spoke to a guy who said he still gets the odd craving, after 24 years!

Keep up the good work, as smokers are becoming the minority now :D

I will be giving it a go myself when I come back from the holidays.

Good luck Dunk.

Well, I managed 163 miles with smoking today - a real achievement for me as I would typically smoke a huge amount when driving.

Although one of my offspring had left a sort of plastic bead bracelet thing in the armrest in the back, and it was pressed into service a makeshift Rosary bead device in an effort to keep my left hand occupied

Sense of smell enhanced
Not breathless in the gym so quickly
Gums bleeding heavily when brushing teeth (normal apparently)

All good

But by christ I'd love a fag at this moment in time :D

Congrats also. I have never smoked in my life but the only thing that I am addicted to is coffee. If I don’t have coffee I become tired with a very bad headache. On occasions I have lasted without coffee for a couple of days but this caused me not to have enough energy to do anything

Why do I keep hearing about men giving up smoking but rarely if ever women? Also I am sure I see more young girls smoking than boys nowadays, not that I am looking at the girls to check out anything other than if they are smoking of course. :)

congrats Dunk I gave up earlier in the year after reading the fame Alan Carrs easy way to stop smoking (you should read it... - even though you've already stopped - it might just be the trigger to make sure you don't lapse)

Feck feck feck feck!

God I hate not smoking - all the positive stuff like improved taste/smell, no yellow fingers, not stinking, car cleaner inside.

Did have a minor lapse on Saturday night - brothers stag night, after a couple of pints I scrounged a smoke off a mate... threw it away after two drags as it tasted atrocious!

Rather chuffed with myself so far.

The most interesting thing is how much loose change I've got kicking around suddenly in pockets and the car! Whilst a packet of fags is a fiver, I always tended to buy a drink and chocolate bar at the same time - reckon I was doing £7 a day on fags on that basis.

Yeah, I've always chuckled at the 'MAKES YOU INFERTILE' labels on cigarette packets.

Some days I wish it bloody had!
