Another tyre thread ...
Another tyre thread ...
... but with a slightly different twist.
Many of us will have read the various posts about whether to stick with the OEM Michelins that our cars were supplied with, to upgrade to newer Micheln rubber compounds or to move to another brand entirely.
The purpose of this thread is not to reawaken the emotive debates about different brands. Instead, it is hoped that people will contribute their experiences of tyres in an objective and (ultimately) informative way.
Where this has come from is that I was down at Micheldever this morning replacing the rears on my B3S. The car came with original style Pilot Sports and this is what I put on the car again this morning. Prior to starting the work I was discussing the merits of PS2 or even PS3 but my experience is that I consistently get 20k miles from a set of rear PS tyres whereas my one expereince of PS2 was that I had to change them after 14k miles. In my mind, therefore, the extra 6k miles (and associated cost savings) far outweighed the relatively small improvement in grip and performance. As for PS3, they are too new to be able to start to accumulate some relative and objective data - so I wasn't even prepared to consider these as an option this time round.
So, in the interests of science, it would be extremely helpful if owners could share their experiences of tyres on their particular cars in such a way that we might begin to collate some meaningful data.
If possible, please could contributors stick to just the facts as detailed and not enter into discussion about the merits of one tyre versus another. At this point, I am simply interested in tyre longevity versus model of car.
My starter - please add your data to the subsequent posts in a similar format:
Car: B3S Touring
Tyre: Michelin Pilot Sport - 40k miles (fronts) & 20k miles (rears) [consistently over 175k miles of use since new]
Tyre: Michelin PS2 - 14k miles (rears)

Car: B3S Coupe ('02)
Mileage: 18k (so far)
Tyres: Goodyear Asymetrics 255/35/18 (rears) - £115+vat each (plus fitted/ba etc) - Micheldever
Fitted June '09... enjoy driving enthusiastically...
I'll update this post when I change them. Fronts have plenty of tread on them and were replaced shortly after the rears due to uneven wear (mixture of poor alignment and control arm bush getting sloppy)
From records the tyres before (Pirelli P9000) covered 20k miles - £105+vat each

I've just bought 4 of those from Camskill. They were on offer, £409 inc delivery.joylove wrote:Vredstein Ultrac Sessanta. Look great, low noise, good grip wet and dry, but by heck have they worn fast. Fronts are like new and the backs need replacing after less than 9000 miles. I'm no wheelspin & powerslide merchant either. Gonna try Toyos next, they seem to have more tread depth from new.
Read loads of reviews on them before I took the plunge & nearly everyone raved about them
Nothing wrong with them at all, except the wear rate. The backs have worn several times faster than the fronts. The wear is even accross the whole tyre. Maybe it's an E46 thing.OAS313 wrote:I've just bought 4 of those from Camskill. They were on offer, £409 inc delivery.joylove wrote:Vredstein Ultrac Sessanta. Car : B8 4.6 Touring
Year : 1997
Kilometres : 240,000
Tyres originally : Michelin Pilot Sport
Front : 235/45x17
Rear : 265/35x17
As the rear tyre size is no longer available from Michelin , and the
next best thing 255/35x17 is also unavailable , Alpina now recommend
Front : 225/45x17
Rear : 245/40x17
I now use Continental Conti Sport 3's , and have used CS 2's
previously , and I'm very happy with grip and both wet and dry , and
also with the wear rate .
I have just replaced the rears at cost of Eur 435 incl balancing etc
and would say I got between 30-35,000 kms out of them . Fronts
still have a good amount of tread left .
On other E36's with 'tuned' suspension I've used Yokahama's ;
AVS's worked well , S1Z's less so .
Pirelli Zero Nero's were absolutely attrocious !!

Tyre (F): Michelin PS2, 21000 miles and enough tread for another 5-10k I'd guess.
Tyre (R): Michelin PS2, just replaced, worn to the limit at 21000 miles which I'm happy with given Charles' experience.
The replacement PS2s (255/35 94Y R18) came in at £388 fully fitted which I also think is pretty good!

Rear: Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - 17,000 miles (just replaced with Michelin PS 3's)
Front: Michelin PS2, 46000 miles (just replaced with Michelin PS 3's)
Echo previous comments about the Vredensteins - excellent tyres but wear quite quickly. I got 38,000 out of my last pair of Michelin rears but almost all of my mileage is motorway stuff.
