Hey metrics, controversial and subjective of course. Having witnessed this myself at other meets, I kinda agree with you. That being said the word gentleman is broad one these days and those who choose to over rev, race and crash their motors. Well each to their own! (By the way - have witnessed a brand new m4 and e60 m5 being totalled on the public roads). I get that people want to enjoy their cars but on the public roads is stupid. Im sure there were more calm and collected folk at the ML meet but they wouldnt have got noticed...such is life.

Anyway will shut up now and will drive slowly in my slow Alpina :D

Agreed.

I will sound like an old fart saying this, but M cars used to be a very specialised and niche offering, produced in low volumes and thus a rare sight.

BMW (and the other German marques) are now high volume, mass market brands, and so M have followed the same strategy.

When I was a kid (and I am definitely sounding old now) seeing a BMW or Merc was an event. Seeing a M car was bouncing up and down exciting. Now the only way to get the rarity is to buy a limited run edition M car and have it painted lime green.

But that's the way the world is and that's fine. At least with Alpina offerings that niche that wants engineering, subtly, refinement and rarity is catered for. And the beauty is most people don't even notice what it is.
