Sums SA up in my experience :( I dreaded being in any road accident when I was working out there.

Those taxi drivers (that's what those minibuses are) don't give a flying fig about anyone else on the road. The number of road accidents caused by those morons is quite incredible as they are effectively unregulated and drive until they drop...plus MAN can they drink! Christmas-time in SA is like a scene from a horror movie, with corpses everywhere by the roadsides as the number of long-distance journies goes through the roof; along with the accident rate.

Looks like a normal SA street scene.
In the 3 weeks we were there for Christmas, over 1200 road deaths in Kwazulu Natal province alone  .
Not surprising really, with the amount of folk hitch hiking on the Motorway :wall2

..and driving in the pitch-dark with their lights off to conserve the battery  Closest near-death experience I have ever had :( and two of my work colleagues were killed by a tanker driver in similar circumstances. Terrible place to be a driver.

Around the Cape and the Garden route the roads were great and driving fine.
Once you get around Durban all hell breaks loose :(
