my touring is on bilstein B8s. Bilstein actually list a shock for the e46 B3s which is what i've used Same here. Changed mine at 55,000 miles ish. The difference was incredible. I had the same trouble in November with the wife's X3 35d.
I had a forced re-gen and 2 bottles of Forte DPF cleaner and it has been fine since.
It has done 82,000 miles.

Can I ask what the niggles were?

I believe there are some anomalies.
After checking with Sytner Nottingham from pads, discs and front calipers over the last 9 years my 3.3 has had 330 parts fitted.
